The 2018 World Gymnastics Championship is being held at the Big O in Montreal Oct 2-8, 2018. The stadium will be split in half, with the female events on one half and the male events on the other half. Should be a great event for Montreal. This is the first time Canada has ever hosted this event.

A few pics of BMO Field (called Exhibition Place this weekend) for the ScotiaBank Centennial Classic. Sounds like MLSE ovepriced and underestimated the market again. Lots of tickets left

It was the same thing in Winnipeg, it didn't sell out until right before the game. I guess we're finding out the limits of how much fans are willing to tolerate... frankly, I'm surprised those limits weren't reached long ago.

But wow, BMO is quite the beehive of activity with three different leagues having major events there in barely over one month's time.

The novelty of outdoor games is wearing off on people.

Not sure why anyone would want to pay big money to watch a less than optimally played game from far away while freezing their ass off.

Totally agree. They need to limit these games and strongly consider holding some of them in non-NHL markets such as Regina.

That would be the logical next step given that NHL cities appear to be growing tired of them. I wonder which non-NHL markets besides Regina you could realistically expect to fill a stadium for an outdoor game? I would think the list would be quite short... perhaps one of the cities in Wisconsin (Milwaukee/Madison/Green Bay), Seattle, maybe Portland? I guess there's Hamilton but it's pretty much a de facto NHL market what with the Leafs.

But yeah, the outdoor game thing is kind of goofy all things considered. Pay a steep premium for a crappy view and less than ideal conditions... no thanks. The NHL has certainly milked it as much as it could over the last decade though.

Green Bay would be interesting--great stadium and we know the fans can handle cold weather. If the Maritimes had a big enough stadium I think they could hold a game and it would be supported. Other than that slim pickings. If Seattle thought they might get a team out of it they might support it but that's far from a given.

If there's a conflict in the naming of the event and the stadium then the stadium name is altered. Less a Scotiabank rule and more of an NHL/sports event rule in general.

Game in Hershey: Philadelphia v Pittsburgh. Hershey v anyone

The same could be done in Canadian cities:

Game in Moncton: Montreal v Boston. Moncton v. Saint John. UNB v UdeM.

It grows the game, gets local teams involved, and overall can be a spectacle if done well.

They would have whatever slight appeal outdoor games have left while combining that with the smalltown atmosphere of Hockeyville and Hometown Hockey.

I can't think of a more perfect looking stadium for outdoor hockey. Those stands are the perfect size and shape for an outdoor rink.

Yeah, a one-time event and having a permanent professional sports team are equivalent.

Complete nonsense. It's the teams playing and how often this "special event" has been done in the past that matter not the location.

I agree Corndogger plus, Regina & Quebec City & maybe Hamilton would be the best places in Canada outside the NHL cities to have NHL outdoor classic. Even though NHL in Saskatchewan is the lowest followed in all of Canada, Regina & the province has a proven ability to host CFL stadium football including Grey Cup games, and has done so now for over a hundred years plus they have a brand spanking new stadium, Quebec City seems to really want to have an NHL experience so doing one at their outdoor football stadium would probably work, Hamilton likewise..

Moncton does have a stadium:

Permanent seating is 10,000 but has been expanded in the past to a capacity of 20,750.

As for an inability of holding stadium events, the Moncton Stadium in the last six years has hosted:
- IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships
- FIFA Women's World Cup
- FIFA Women's U20 World Cup
- Canadian Track & Field Championships (twice)
- CFL regular season games (three times)

As for the crack about not being able to sell out the CFL games, the first game was a sellout, and the other two games were about 95% sellouts. That's a pretty good record given the average attendances in the CFL in many of the venues across the country.............
