So if revenues are limited in an outdoor venue, then what will be subsidizing the shortfalls in these other new or newer outdoor venues?
Wasn't the whole idea in Calgary not to have an outdoor venue by pairing up with the fieldhouse and of course keep some cash in the pockets of the ownership group.
Just heard through a friend that there's going to be an announcement soon that CalgaryNext is dead. Going to build a new rink in east end and a measly 17 million reno to McDump. What a joke.
IMO it should be "new stadium and a 17 million reno to the Saddledome".

City Council report isn't even due out until sometime in January, and we won't even know if we're bidding for the Olympics until the summer.

The terrible side panels on NMS, I still can't get over it.
Why not something like this that will age better and look more modern:

You won't notice on game days when the place is full but for the 345 other days of the year (especially in the winter) it is going to look like a sterile hospital parking garage on the outside.
^ In theory, you're right, but in practice there is a limited budget for a new CFL venue. The Roughriders do well for themselves, but they don't exactly have an unlimited bank account either. If they had spent more money on the exterior, what would you have liked them to give up in order to pay for that?
Reduction of seating by 5,000 (and the diminished revenue potential that goes with that?) Cutting corners on decor all throughout the interior? A more basic roof canopy? Smaller jumbotron? Smaller footprint and concourses overall? All of those things would have had more of an impact on the fan experience than what the exterior looks like.
Personally I think they got it right. I'm sure we'd have all preferred an architectural stunner, but I think we can also recognize that money to pay for top-level design is tough to come by. Even something like Rogers Place would have looked a hell of a lot different had Katz been paying for it out of his own bank account.
Osmo do you even listen to yourself? What difference will game day make, the stadium will still be the same on the outside. Honestly just because it's hosting an event it will magically transform?

Pretty much sums up my thoughts. Am I a fan of the exterior? No. But in the end, the budget was the budget, and there's nothing I would have really wanted to trade off for a better material. Lighting could eventually go a long way to making it look better in the evening/at night.
And it's a good thing it was built when it was... No way provincial funding would be there at all now...

I don't think budgets was the biggest hurdle for NMS exterior vs. just choices that had to be made with maybe too much or too little information. Perhaps a paranoid group wanted to keep things simple to avoid the mistakes that Winnipeg faced and not want any delays? Maybe this was the first option (or last) presented to them?

All I know is one option to keep the exterior one colour versus the mix was apparently not pursued which IMO would have turned out better, and that option would not have blown up any costs.

I don't think you'd be any happier with one colour. It's still the same material (which is what I think is "lacking"), but if it were done in a glass, it'd be fine, but it would've been more expensive. The pattern works with the "Rider" theme: it somewhat mimics the background shield of the logo.
