the crofton seawalk, i used to come down every night and just relax, and it was great until pokemon go came out because there was a cluster of poke stops and a poke gym along it, so late at night it would be crawling with kids catching pokemon and smoking pot

Nova Scotia is a bit of a misnomer. There was a Scottish colony in the early 1600's and a scheme to make the area into "New Scotland" but that failed and Nova Scotia was French (Acadia) until 1713. The Scottish immigration that actually produced descendants today in Nova Scotia started around 1800, and had more of an impact on the northern parts of the province that were thinly settled back then.

Now that I think of it, the main street in Halifax is called Gottingen.

Sort of. Barrington Street is "the" main street but Gottingen is one of a handful of main streets going N-S (more accurately NW-SE) through the North End, the others being Agricola and Robie. Gottingen is the grittier of the three, and historically the most prominent, although it went through a dead/sketchy phase from the 1980s to the early 2000s.

Brunswick Street (and New Brunswick, for that matter) is another German reference.

This one's washed-out looking but here's another rarely-captured part of the old South End of Halifax. Unlike Schmidtville, this isn't a heritage district, but it probably should be.

Today, the Christmas season in St. John's officially begins. The mummers parade was this afternoon, the Festival of Lights is tonight, and the lighting of the (locally) iconic Signal Hill Star and its associated concert/ceremony is tomorrow night. Gleeful!

A few pictures of the mummers rummaging around the city today. I'm going out with my parents this year and our first rounds will be tomorrow.

I saw two veiled Muslim women, which is a lot at any particular event here. I hope they don't know people here sometimes call them mummers behind their back. Seems rude now that we have a little local diversity.

Can't help myself, that photo post is just off the charts good. And one shot in particular stands out just because of how wonderfully it portrays what Toronto is all about.

This shot screams "Toronto" so much it's almost a caricature.
