The roof is now complete and all of the fly forms and scaffolding have been removed. I don't imagine the crane will be far behind.

The Maple looks too stubby. It needs another 7-8 floors...

I'm actually finding it looks taller than expected.

It's still described here as 21 stories, but I am counting 23-24.

I think the double-height top floor is the mechanical penthouse or whatever you call it - does that make it not count as "stories"?

This angle of The Maple is really nice.
I'll get a better pic once the cladding on the penthouse level is complete.

The crane is at the lowest level, just awaiting final disassembly.

So I've heard a few people say the Maple seems too stubby, and it should have been taller. I've been thinking about it for a while, and think that it's more to do with the fact that the tower is super wide, which throws off the proportions. They got a variation from the DRC to go up to almost 54 m wide. The Downtown Halifax Design Manual normally limits tower width to 38 m.

I finally got around to looking at what a 38 m wide tower would have looked like. Jono, I hope you don't mind me cribbing your photo. Also, I offer no commentary as to whether or not such a tower would have been economically viable or workable from a floor layout point-of-view.

I have to say I don't really get the complaints that it's too wide or stubby or whatever. Aiming for a proportional aesthetic might give the skyscraper enthusiasts something to cheer about but really it's about creating density in the downtown and having a functional, economically viable building for people to live in.

FWIW, I don't mind the proportion aesthetic. It gives the building an imposing presence that you wouldn't have if it were slimmer.

If I have any complaints about its appearance, it might be the quality of the cladding that they are using, but I'll wait and see till it's finished before I complain...

Here's Jonno's original pic for comparison:
