I believe the budget for the Burrard Otter (built in Singapore) was just over $22M and actually came in at $21M.

The Burrard Pacific Breeze (built in Victoria) cost $25M to build in 2009.

Don't forget that the Canadian dollar has fallen significantly since they were both tendered and that most commodities are priced in USD.

Apparently that is still a community shuttle route, translink mentioned on a buzzer blog comment. The 6 goes to Yaletown Station now so it relieves some load.

Alarms ringing at Call Centre!

I was just speaking with Transit info and the alarms are going off like crazy, by the time I was done my call a steady alarm was going. They may be possibly exvacuating the building.

Anyone have any more info of what's going on?

Perhaps an "Evergreen Line is operational" alarm?

In all seriousness, I hope that everything's okay.

The whole focus/nitpicking on high capital costs here is kind of moot. It'd be nice to see those costs, but we're not having a capital cost problem; transit projects here in Metro Van have been delivered more cost-efficiently than almost everywhere else in Canada.

Still I gotta say that bit on Surrey's spending on LRT lobbying is pretty damning. $500,000 to lobby for LRT funding with (so far) no clear results? Now this info I want in on.

This was posted by Translink on FB regarding the C21/C23 and the new 23.

"Nathan, we aren't scrapping all the Community Shuttle names but where the ridership is high and we're able to put a larger bus to accommodate those riders, we did so to help ease overcrowding. Thanks all! ^ac"

23 will be a 40ft bus.

The 23 is going to be continuing to be a Community Shuttle vehicle however, the portion of that route that went on Davie will now be served by the 6, which is a conventional bus, and that bus will go to Canada Line and help reduce overcrowding on the Community Shuttles.

Post Mark II/III's once the Mark I's are retired?

I was thinking once the Mark I's are retired, how will train stock
Mark II - 108
Mark III - 56 (current)
Mark III - 206

How would they divide them up? Looking at those numbers I am thinking Mark II's for UBC > Douglas and Mark III's for Waterfront to Langely?

We will most likely see Mk IV trains replace the Mk 1, they have just had a 15 year life extension refurbishment.

I seem to remember hearing that TransLink has some kind of plow-like attachment for SkyTrain, or maybe something that sprays a de-icer on the tracks. Do they? I hope they do because the coming week looks a little...chilly.

Usually they run the trains all night to prevent snow from building up on the tracks. They have "glycol trains" that they run without passengers to spray something on the power rail to prevent ice buildup.

They also had de-icing stations near Waterfront and Columbia that sprayed the under-carriage of the trains with a solution. That solution is also responsible for staining everything near the guideway brown (so long shiny clean Evergreen extension).

For whatever reason, it seemed like they were caught slightly by surprise today, or had to make figure things out on the fly with the new routing.

Does TransLink openly or officially acknowledge they don't have enough rolling stock to properly operate "the World's longest automated driverless transit system?"

Service levels on the Millenium Line through Burnaby and East Van are simply not acceptable.

It's usually not the accumulation of snow that stops SkyTrain, it's the falling snow playing games with the track intrusion systems and causing alarms to go off. Today has been no exception.

Yeah, well - welcome to the club that bus riders have been in ever since the referendum was voted down and Translink was forced through several government-mandated audits to find "service efficiencies".
