They will, or have some other method of getting through snow. Perfecting the winter strategy is precisely why they wanted to start testing now.. so there's 2 full winters of testing before the line opens. One winter wouldn't cut it in case it happened to be a very mild one.

I didn't think the line was complete. Are they testing it on the completed sections?

The line itself is more or less complete east of the railyard (although the stations in that section are not).

On weekdays yes, and supposedly single trams on weekends. I suppose it depends on how busy the system is. But our two vehicle trains are pretty long, about the same length as a 4 car c-train or the Sheppard Subway, and a fair bit longer than anything on Vancouver's skytrain.

Not sure if people have seen this diagram before:

Construction Update
Week of November 28

Progress is clearly visible at the stations and on the guideway along the LRT corridor. With ground improvements completed at Bayview Station, construction begins on columns. At Blair Station, crews are hard at work installing the first section of porcelain tiles. On the guideway near Lees Station, concrete ties are being installed as part of trackwork and residents will also see glimpses of the first light rail vehicle being tested around Cyrville Station.

Drilling caissons at Tunney’s Pasture Station

West Stations

Tunney’s Pasture Station: Preliminary station foundation work is ongoing with crews drilling caissons and beginning ground improvements.

Bayview Station: Crews complete ground improvements for the station and mobilize to begin installing formwork. Other station activities include work on columns, construction of the elevator and escalator pits and mechanical and electrical work.

Pimisi Station: The station continues to take shape; with backfilling finalized this week at the west side of the station, crews begin pouring sections of the foundation slabs. On the east side of the station, installation of grade beams occurs.

Tunnel breakthrough - Parliament Station TVS

Central Stations

Lyon Station cavern: Stripping of the concourse is completed, and crews continue architectural work in the station, including installing rebar and formwork for the sub platform and concrete work for walls and stairs. In the transition, rebar is installed on the walls and arch to allow for future lining work to occur.

Lyon Station west entrance: Construction of the integrated entrance progresses. This week, crews install formwork and rebar for the elevator shaft and station walls. Rock removals take place at the east vent shaft.

Lyon Station east entrance: Concrete work ramps up until early December, including ground floor slab and wall pours. Crews also mobilize to begin shoring the HVAC shaft.

Parliament Station cavern: Crews continue arch waterproofing, install rebar, and begin pouring starter walls and columns in the station. In the running tunnel, work on the invert and final concrete lining pours occur.

Parliament Station west entrance: Final cleanups are ongoing in the parking levels of the Sun Life building and crews mobilize to begin masonry and glazing, part of work on the station’s head house. The next phase of work begins at the east vent shaft, now that the breakthrough connection to the underground station occurred.

Forming and concrete work on C-Walls - Rideau Station

Rideau Station cavern: Crews continue working on station walls and waterproofing sections of the arch and walls and constructing the invert. Shotcrete activities are ongoing in the transition.

Rideau Station west entrance: Removals of the Rideau Centre’s foundation panels are completed and backfilling to grade level begins. Shoring occurs at the HVAC shaft, including pile drilling.

Rideau Station east entrance: Progress is visible at the entrance; crews are now installing rebar for the upper level concourse and continue forming the tunnel vent shaft walls. At street level, shoring begins at the west vent shaft.

Rideau Street is closed 24/7 to vehicular traffic to permit works to advance, including jet grouting activities.

uOttawa Station: Crews continue pouring concrete for the station foundation, walls and platform slabs in addition to working on mechanical and electrical rough-ins.

East Portal: The next phase of ramp excavation begins and crews install whaler beams to prepare the ramp for future guideway work.

St-Laurent Station structural steel installation

East Stations

Lees Station: This week, station construction includes micro-piling for the next weeks along with work on the watermain.

Hurdman Station: Crews install structural steel for the stairs and continue concrete pours at the station. Work on the roof of ancillary building begins and mechanical and electrical work is ongoing. Construction of the bus operators’ building advances with porcelain panels installation and final mechanical and electrical work taking place by the end of the week.

Tremblay Station: The station continues to take shape; crews waterproof the roof, complete the last sections of deck and masonry, and continue mechanical rough-ins prior to the next phase of station construction, including structural steel installation.

St-Laurent Station: This week station construction includes structural steel installation for the plenum and concrete pours for the platform curbs as well as for the elevators at the south side of the station. Crews also install elevator tracks for the next weeks.

Bracket installation + work on stairs - Cyrville Station

Cyrville Station: Station construction continues to advance; work includes glazing, installation of brackets, framing of the composite panels and pouring concrete at the auxiliary building.

Blair Station: The first section of porcelain tiles installation begins this week on the stairs in addition to ongoing soffit panel installation, framing, and electrical and escalator work. With masonry completed, the bus operators’ building continues to take shape with deck installation and electrical rough-ins.

Mining + running tunnel umbrella - west of Rideau Station

Tunnel Excavation and Support

Work on the last section of running tunnel west of Rideau Station continues with the installation of the umbrella and bench mining.

Final work on TPSS - east of Tunney's Pasture Station

Guideway

Tunney’s Pasture Station to West Portal: Crews complete electrical work for the traction power sub station east of Tunney’s Pasture Station and continue working on Overhead Catenary System foundations, installing fencing and building the retaining wall east of Bayview Station to West Portal.

Mann Avenue Bridge to west of Tremblay Station: This section of guideway continues to take shape with the installation of the Overhead Catenary System foundations west of Lees Station.

Just east of Lees Station to west of Tremblay Station, concrete ties are installed, ballast placement occurs and tamping continues.

Other Activities

Mann Avenue Bridge: Crews complete concrete pours and continue constructing the parapet and wing walls.

Upcoming Construction Activities

In the coming weeks, the following construction activities are scheduled to occur:
  • Lyon Station west vent shaft work resumes.
  • Structural steel installation at uOttawa Station.
  • Installation of traction power sub stations on the guideway west of Lees Station and just east of Hurdman Station.
  • Fencing installation on guideway just west of Tremblay Station.
  • Overhead Catenary System will be energized in phases along the guideway between Belfast Yard and Blair Station for vehicle testing.

Good Day.... yup...
the photographer is standing under the VIA rails, looking north at the Belfast underpass, directly at a worker walking towards the east / west tunnels split under Belfast Rd.
EnJoy!
PS: notice no power OCS rails overhead yet.... no power at this spot yet.

Remember why the tunnel was mined? It was to minimize disruption of surface operations. I would say that the disruptions along Queen and Rideau have been severe enough that a quick Cut & Cover shallow tunnel would have been preferred by many.

Cut and cover could have made the sinkhole much worse.

I think in hindsight Rideau definitely should have been cut/cover.

Elsewhere though I think it worked pretty well. I don't think anyone noticed the tunnel between Laurier and the Rideau Centre being mined out (I'm not even sure where the tunnel goes) or from Metcalfe to Sussex.
