I don't think the light goes anywhere but out, horizontally. So I don't think the residents above or below the edge lighting see it at all. I suspect the residents at L'Hermitage (across Richards Street) complained a lot when they were testing the edge lighting back in April at a very bright level. So now they're so timid they won't raise the light level above the lowest setting. Meanwhile, the Telus Garden condo residents on the north side have to put up with the very bright edge lighting on the office tower. I just wish they would consider raising the light level on the condo tower one or two notches.

A green wall - with some soft lighting, either on the wall and /or embedded street level is no masterpiece, but would mitigate the harshness of that laneway. Looks Post-War, right now.

I find almost every alley in Vancouver, post-war, and hideous.
It's sad that this is one of the better ones we have.

True!! And why does that have to be the case, I wonder? For a city that likes to tell the world how beautiful it is, it could sure do better in some areas.

Pic by me Friday - spider clamps in place.
I was disappointed, as I was hoping the glass would be folded (accordion-like) - but it'll be flat.
The clamps are really far apart - so unless there are gaps (left and right of each panel) - those will be large panes of glass.

The weird thing is that looking down the street - on the "long view" angle - the old curtain wall, with its aluminum mullions and contrasting colours, will have probably provided more visual interest than a flat sheer surface of glass - even if the glass has patterned frit on it (since that fritt will probably be washed out by the reflections).

I guess the gap is for the ventilation?

Pretty poorly designed if they couldn't accommodate grills or screening in front of the vents (even big metal screens to match the fritt pattern, rumoured to be leaves/floral). You can see that there's no accommodation for cross-beam anchor points across that section at all (nor at the bottom edge).

I'm perplexed at the quality of offsite construction here. Apparently the final lift of asphalt hasn't been laid on the pavement right next to the curb gutter here. I'm surprised the City is already installing the bike racks without the work completed. Where is the City inspector on this? This has also caused ponding at the corner of Robson and Richards everytime it rains. Shoddy to say the least.

That glass, with what is existing behind it, is going to make for such a busy mess of a building...

Not what I expected.
The clear sections are a lot more transparent - so the "mess" behind is quite visible.
It may have just enough to cover up all the metal supports though.
At least the green will add colour.

I note they have removed the first sections of installed glass. This program will continue to move in fits and micro-bursts.

Another consequence of not having gutters on the glass awning
(in addition to a constant stream of water drops "dancing" along the pavement on rainy days)
Barriers have been erected in case snow and ice fall from the awning.
I can see icicles forming if there's a freeze thaw.
