The lack of public space on the block would be interesting if they weren't redeveloping the Art Gallery plaza.

We've just added two new posts to the Changing City blog. They're both in the Downtown Eastside, but they're also both west of Main Street, so in Downtown.

One is a proposed mixed-use (and we assume condo) project on Water Street that would replace Gaslight Square and restore the heritage buildings on either side; https://changingcitybook.com/2016/11/30/131-water-street/

The other is across Abbott Street from Woodwards, with 132 rental units proposed by Holborn in a 10 storey building that requires a rezoning. https://changingcitybook.com/2016/11/30/95-west-hastings-street/. Lots more details of that project are on the City of Vancouver website.

That's really unfortunate if we lose 131 Water St. I think it's a unique building in Gastown... Not sure how I feel about it being replaced with faux-heritage.

great to see Holborn moving on their Hastings site, they've been holding it for over 10yrs now. Shame they couldn't get the building next door, which might allowed them to create a more pronounced sawtooth effect.

Not sad to see Gaslight square go, unfortunately it never really worked, so I'm hopeful that the replacement improves on it.

Moving the heritage house from site in preparation for demo of remaining coach house & walk up apartment building. Heritage house to be temporarily relocated to 215 W1st Ave then later to 400 blk of East 5th where it will be renovated into rental. It's a pretty tight fit in that alley! My pics Nov.30:

Stanley Park renos

Not exactly skyscrapers & not exactly downtown but a couple of renos to important structures in Stanley Park. Prospect Point Cafe in the beginning stages of a major reno (My photo Nov.4):

The former Fish House restaurant is about to undergo a 4.5 million dollar makeover for Stanley Park Brewing http://parkboardmeetings.vancouver.ca/20...oposedDesign-LeaseAgreement-20161128.pdf(My photo of it's current state taken Nov.30):

Thanks.

I agree that Gaslight Square will be a loss.
It'll just be more of the same along Water St. - i.e. uniformity.

The only different structure will be the atrium with the John Fluevog shoe store.

Heritage House to 215 W 1st?!

Hmmm... the Heritage House being moved from the WE to 215 West 1st. That's intriguing. I wonder what the timing is on that as there's currently ZERO infrastructure for it at that address. The location is the gravel parking lot to the East of the old, rusty, vacant machine shop within the large parcel of land in SEFC that the city still owns.

The parcel is ultimately slated for many low-mid-rise towers and some additional parkland, but that's a ways off.

The rest of the site is currently used for police, Telus, and Downtown Nissan parking as well as temporary installations (on the West side of the building) such as Enchant Vancouver and Cavalia.

Thanks for the updates Vanville.

As far as Gaslight square, I'm pretty indifferent. I'm sure what was knocked down to build it looked more like what is being proposed so we're really just back where we started... but more seismically sound!

What was there before Gaslight Square was quite a bit shorter https://changingvancouver.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/water-street-100-block-1/

It was developed by Marathon Realty (CP's development company in those days) after the decision was made not to tear down Water Street for Project 200 and a waterfront freeway. It was designed to be the entrance to a footbridge over the tracks to a 'Fisherman's Wharf' - but then Granville Island was chosen for that investment instead, so the waterfront access was never built.

Not sure what to think about the new podium.
It interfaces better with the tower, I think, but looks more/too imposing
(esp. since there are heritage building across Cambie and townhouses across the alley to the rear)

Renderings from the GBL website.
Strange how they have reclad the Law Society Building.
