Are they on private property? The government erecting religious symbology is a big no-no.
They have been lighting a Christmas tree on that spot for nearly a hundred years. When the tree died, some hydro workers in the 1950s decided to improve on the tradition with a cross made of an unused hydro tower. I consider it a grey area.
The other cross has nothing to do with Christianity. It's the awareness symbol for tuberculosis and still used by Lung Associations.

I suppose so but a Christmas tree is part of the greater culture today. It's only a Christian symbol for Christians or a pagan symbol for pagans. My family celebrate the holidays with gusto and we're atheists. Some of our traditions are borrowed from pagan ritual but for us it's just a cultural holiday, a time for family and friends.
I have zero issue with religious displays on private property but don't want my government doing so. They're supposed to be representing all Canadians.

Government's should be completely impartial for decisions that impact all Canadians however, I seldom find issues with their support of specific groups or organisations. It's keep things interesting and diverse and almost impossible to avoid.
Back in the early 1900s Hamilton was a major tuberculosis centre (Chedoke Hospital) for Canada and so one of those cross (Cross of Lorraine) were installed by the hospital at the top of the escarpment to remind others about the needy and the sick and to pray and wish the patients speedy recovery. The hospital thought it was important for patients to get fresh air and the escarpment provided plenty of wind.
Best time to go is October. The colours are their most vibrant around then.
