Yeah, like I said earlier, from the look of that picture Skycity would be pretty close to 90 storeys. Maybe someday we'll have something like that in our skyline, probably not in my lifetime though.

That looks like it would span a number of city blocks, just to get the floor plates/girth that big, let alone the height.

It should be noted as "wildly not to scale" as a disclaimer.

Before we all jump to conclusions, lets go over the facts:

1. No one has seen any drawings yet - so we don't know if the size and scale of the building has increased.

2. The opening of Portage and Main seems like it is being postponed.

3. The placement of the new and improved SkyCity looks to be right in the centre of Portage and Main.

Coincidence?

Or will the newly redesigned and much larger SkyCity takes it's place at the heart of our great city!

And to think that people thought opening the intersection to pedestrians would slow down traffic...

Even though all of us are here for the tall buildings, I would think this illustrates the sillyness of how a 1,000 plus ft building would look in Winnipeg's skyline.

If I was realistically dreaming for pie in the sky projects for Winnipeg it would likely be a couple 500+, maybe a 600+ or so and one pinnacle in the 800 ft range.

I agree. I'd prefer many 500' building prior to a 1000' building. But hey, if one was proposed, of course we'd be all over that.

For what it's worth I'd be OK with a single building dominating the skyline, but the downside of that is that it would make it seem like the skyline never changes, as there probably wouldn't be another 1,000+ footer built in our lifetimes. The 20-30 storey buildings that make up the backbone of Winnipeg's skyline would barely have any impact on the skyline's appearance at all even if another 20 were built later on.

Congratulations Skycity on achieving 1,000 footer status!

There are plenty of things to discuss about this project, the floorplans, the amenities, the interior finishes, the cladding materials **not quite sure what cladding means, but I hear other people talking about it**.

Do we think the commercial condos will sell?
Was Ellis Don a good choice?
What do you think of the sales guy?
Who will provide construction financing?
Thoughts on other projects by Kirkor Architects?
Will unit investors be able to find renters?
What were they testing for with those big machines? What does that mean?
They did a press release on the registration of their King Charlotte condo in Toronto, does that mean they'll have money now to further invest here?

I can think of so many other things to talk about other than how tall the building looks on a postcard.

the testing is geotechnical....its looking at the soil conditions....this is done during the early construction documents phase of a project to help the engineers design their structure.

it is not an expensive task ($5-10k maybe)...at least not the way they are doing it here....we saw much more expensive testing being done on the gravel parking lot at portage and main and that project still died.

its a good sign, but not unexpected if they are moving ahead at all.

new build rentals in downtown have extremely low vacancy....they should be able to find a market on some level.
