A near head-on collision on Peacekeeper's Way, a secondary "highway" in suburban Conception Bay South.

Nice views of the road and the edges of CBS, though.

Toronto is complaining much of the use is coming from out-of-towners which are not paying city taxes to maintain the roads.

To avoid this unfairness, I see 3 alternatives to all out tolling:
-Just toll out of town folks. If your licence plate is registered at a Toronto address, you will not get dinged.
-Re-amalgamate Toronto to include cities like Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughn, Markham, etc. This would essentially create a 'super city', where everyone's taxes could go into maintaining these roads.
-Have the province operate/maintain the roads (not gonna happen, Ontario is broke).

I agree, they should do the same thing with the MET in Montréal.

The difference is that the Gardiner and DVP are totally city-owned highways. The Métropolitaine is owned by the province (like the 401 and other highways in Toronto).

Of course they could but they won't.

There is much less incentive for the MTQ to do this than for a city that wants to make "suburbanites" pay for using its roads to come to their jobs in the city.

Fairly pleased with this announcement and do hope it happens. I wouldn't agree with only tolling out of towners however as the revenue (in theory) would be directed towards transit expansion. Having a discounted rate for Toronto residents or lower rates for reverse commutes could be an option. I assume it would be fully electronic so that's not hard to do.

I'm not talking about people from Laval or Blainville, but people from elsewhere. who live outside the Montréal region.

Still mostly the same issue though. The MTQ's mandate is to ensure mobility of people and goods in the entire province, and its funds come from taxpayers all across Quebec.

Tolling the Gardiner and DVP is a great idea, but I can't help but feel that John Tory is doing it as a last ditch attempt to save his increasingly costly and unpopular Smarttrack proposal.

If that's what it takes to save Smart Tracks then so be it. ST will still offer a fast transit alternative at an affordable price to thousands who currently have no options.

Pour aider à éponger le coût faramineux des travaux de réfection, non?

Ça ne serait pas une mesure contre l'étalement urbain, et en plus la Ville de Montréal ne verra probablement pas un sou de cet argent.

why do they need hundreds of millions to save Smart Tracks ?
