We've seen numerous images of Robert Kennedy's visit(s) to Lo Angeles. This one is new to NLA.

The seller didn't say where in Los Angeles this was taken, but I'm pretty sure that cross you see behind the crowd is (was?) on Olvera Street.

If the date is correct, this was taken the day before Robert Kennedy was assassinated.

Does anyone know....did Mr. Kennedy speak at Olvera Street, or are the people just waiting to see him drive by?

Poking out over the roof of the gas station is a building with what looks like a spire, and signage starting "GO.."....any ideas on what that is?





A 1936 aerial shows the gas station. To the south on Fairfax is a Vons Market with a tri-cornered rooftop sign.





Here's the Von's in question, with a sliver of the gas station visible on the far left.

LAPL has four William Reagh photos of Robert Kennedy in the Olvera Street area. They're all dated 1968, although no day or month is given. Here are two of them.

'mystery' location.

I believe this amateur photograph was taken for a photography contest (there were several others on ebay).



The description on the reverse says the photograph was taken along the Arro Seco, three miles below _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Camp.

I can't make out the name of the camp. I'm hoping one of you can help.
I thought it would be fun to work our way south (3 miles) from the camp site and see just where the photographer took this image.

Another interesting tidbit is that the photographer lived on Bunker Hill.

Does anyone know what stood at 336 So. Bunker Hill.....was it an apartment building or private residence?

If you look closely, the name of the Drive-In is on the Coca-Cola sign (red arrow below), but I can't quite make it out. (maybe Ron's....or Don's?)

I think the mystery camp may be Switzer's Camp.

There was another commercial I loved as a kid (from around 1966/67) It was set to a hollywoodized 'Indian' drumbeat.

I'm curious to see how many of you remember this one.

Yes, I know......the commercial is for beer, but I just absolutely loved the animated bear and drumbeat.
I even asked my parents if we could go to "The Land of Sky Blue Waters" on vacation. lol.

I believe that is a side hallway in the old Philharmonic Auditorium. Looks like when they demolished it (in the 80's?) they just leveled it and filled over the lower levels with parking lot.

I remember that commercial (at least the bear and tom-tom- part), from Pasadena in the early-mid 50s. The man who wrote the music died not long ago.

I couldn't find any additional information on the convention.

I believe you're looking at the El Earl/Hillcrest Apartments (old name later became, I think, the Hill Court Apts) on the SE corner of Court and Flower. And the two dark openings you're seeing are the apparatus doors for the fire station (engine company 16?) on Hope Street just south of Court Street.

Here's Engine Company 16 at 139 North Hope Street as it looked circa 1914. The Truck 6 extension was added in 1912. There's more pictures and history here.

& thanks to Godzilla for reminding me I have a sub-par memory.

The C.H.I.P.S photograph was posted before, but we didn't figure out the exact location (Huntington archives says the location is somewhere in San Bernardino)

Here's another Lloyd Wright house courtesy of Julius Shulman. This is "Job 1559: Redlich (Ivo) House (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1953".



The inside features exposed stonework. I don't see any interior doors.



That looks like a well stocked bar.



Sadly, this is as close as we get to seeing the upper floor.

The house is/was at 602 North Arden Drive in Beverly Hills. A page at ncmodernist.org says, "1946 - The Ivo Redlich House, Garage, and Landscaping, 602 North Arden, Beverly Hills CA. House destroyed, possibly around 1988." The property websites, on the other hand, still give a build date of 1947. You can't see the house from the street due to the high hedges, so I had to get an aerial view. It's obviously different from the first Shulman picture, but has roughly the same proportions, so maybe "heavily modified" is more accurate than "destroyed". Does anyone know any more details?
