Agreed. Who would put this idea forward? I can't see how the city would even start to consider this, let alone have the drive to push it to completion. It's a real shame - this would have a major impact on regional transport.

Wouldn't need to eat up much real estate, assuming each company stores and maintains their fleet elsewhere.

You say that as it companies should not mind having massive added costs and overhead to have multiple sites. It is not a small assumption for the businesses involved.

Regarding adding the airport shuttle or what have you, perhaps having this in the vicinity of the airport makes most sense. There is land around there that could easily take this on, and it makes the airport more of a transportation hub overall.

Perhaps the city builds a hub with enough stalls for the various operators, and they rent the spaces. They could then have a separate facility elsewhere where land is cheaper if neccesary.

The question would be where to put it - it would ideally be central, next to an LRT station serving all the lines, and maybe even some distant future heavy/high speed rail station. But there isn't really anywhere available that fits. Maybe one of the parking lots along the CP tracks.

What about the gravel parking lot on the south side of 9 Ave, between Macleod and 4 St SE? I'd say there is enough room for 20 or so bays, with a strip for waiting buses along the tracks. Some form of development could be built above the bus bays to provide extra revenue from the site.

Access to Deerfoot/Centre St-16 Ave is decent, and it's within a couple blocks of all three LRT lines. For reference, the bus bays at the airport fit into a significantly smaller footprint. The Greyhound station also uses less space.

I think your suggestion, that this would be a city-owned facility with bays rented out to private operators, is spot on.

I think an above-ground parkade is planned for that lot.

Wasn't there at least one iteration of a future High Speed Rail plan where there was both a downtown and an airport station? HSR+Regional transit (bus)+LRT+Airport

If the CPA is allowed to build a parkade in/near the East Village, a depot could be incorporated into the project. I'm not a fan of the parkade happening but a ground floor Coach Depot and rooftop playing field(s) would help change my mind.

CPA has plans to build a parkade in the East Village along 9th Ave next to the Enmax Power Plant

I doubt that Greyhound is any kind of a stumbling block with respect to the West Village lands and their redevelopment.

On Hockey Night in Canada right now, Hrudey just had an update on the new arena. It's nothing more than discussion but an interesting tidbit was that while King and the Flames want to build it in the West Village, it's the City's preference that it's built in the East Village.

The East Village is a far better location (I assume we're talking either Railtown or the Stampede Grounds?). There has already been a plan made for the West Village that would make much better use of the land and not waste prime riverfront on a travelling circus' tent. And the east end is a wasteland that shows no signs of being redeveloped any time soon, without a reason to do so. Win-win, IMO.

^I second that. Keep all the nonsense contained to the stampede grounds where there is already established infrastructure for handling large groups.

Like you, I far prefer the CMLC's plans for the West Village. Though I understand why the Flames ownership wants the West side, so much more open land to cash in on...

Shoot for the moon, and maybe fail to launch altogether. I wonder how much they'd make on the side building out the rest of the WV during after the rink?

Ya, that seems to be the trend now. While everyone's arguing about the fancy new facility, you're busy acquiring all the land around it for an eventual massive payday. Hence why they are pushing so hard to get the city or Provence to pay for the cleanup.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if the city decided that the best site was on or near the stampede, the Flames find a way to back out.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post, as it it likely in reference to Firepark, but whatever:

The mayor reiterated that discussions about a second plan “that requires much less public money and has much more public benefit” continue to take place.

How you read into that that there was any likelihood of a reference to Firepark is beyond me. Maybe the second proposal is a new arena at Railtown, a field house up where it's already been envisioned to go at the baseball stadium and a heavily revamped McMahon.

I've always been under the impression Remington wasn't interested in the arena on his lands, too valuable for actual mixed use development. Most likely is the parking lots just south of 12th avenue on the Stampede lands. Puts it between the Red and future Green LRT line, and may finally allow Stampede to build up their vision of 4th street SE.

That's just Suburbia's wishful thinking. I'm not sure if he has ever come to a meet, but we should have a special party if development plans are ever announced for Firepark.

I will give Suburbia a handy if the arena ends up there!

I was at CREB for a course and took a little drive around the area. WAY to much development and infrastructure would be needed to make an arena there. Firstly, sure the LRT is right there but from a vehicular perspective the access is going to be a lot of trouble. Sure there is potential for a right-in-right out from Memorial westbound but it would be a nightmare. Secondly, access from eastbound memorial would require a dedicated overpass. Access of Barlow trail would be a nightmare and let's just face it. There will never be an entertainment district in the midst of an industrial park. The only thing going for this site is the view.

Firepark makes sense for office campus development and not much else.
