The province had to approve it because the Mayors were not vague enough. Over-promising if you will. They could have had "and a free bike for everyone" and the BC government would have made them take that out because they didn't specify a keychain ornament, mountainbike, moped or a motorcycle. It has to be specific enough when it comes to what, but vague enough that they can walk back anything (eg like technology choices, number of routes, number of stops/stations, alignment) that was promoted by by the Mayors but infeasible, poor or negative business case, constantly changing costs, and so forth which is why "Rapid Transit" and not "Light Rail" or "Subway" was in it.

I feel it was actually winnable too, but like the US election, polls were wrong, again. Why did people vote to cut off their nose? Probably because Jordan Bateman did exactly the same thing Trump did, appealed to the populist notion that Translink is somehow wasteful, even though it wasn't.

What have we learned in the last 10 years? If you want something to go your way, you have to appeal to the populist sentiment. If Translink had promoted Skytrain and Bus service extensions in every region, I'm sure it would have succeeded. But instead only Vancouver was getting the Subway, so SouthOfFraser voted against it. Only Surrey was getting Light Rail, so North of Fraser voted against it along with those who know it's a bad project, Tsawwassen, Delta, Coquitlam and Poco were getting nothing so they voted it down. At least Two mayors threw cold water on it. Hell I'm pretty sure if the SFU gondola was in it, that might have just nudged it towards enough support to pass, but Burnaby was getting nothing otherwise, Burnaby already has the Skytrain running through it.

Every area needed something, and it fell short. It also needed the full support of all the Mayors, which it didn't get. It needed support of the Province (eg Both Christy Clark and whoever leads the NDP) and didn't get it from either, though the NDP's Transportation critic at least supported it.

The CTF astroturfing was the lead weight that sunk it, because the Media was more than happy to have Bateman on day after day. He claims he didn't spend very much money, but the amount of free publicity that Global, CTV, CKNW, and all the papers gave him was worth far more money than the amount spent by the Mayors on advertising.

Here's some things that a future Transit referendum would need need to succeed:

- Instead of reacting to Bateman's BS, ignore him and just state the facts that prove him wrong in the process
- Get people who are transit enthusiasts from each region interviews in the Media
- Make sure that people know that these projects are good for them, even if they don't plan on using it.
- Have all the mayors campaign in their own community in support of it. If someone isn't on board (Mayor Corrigan only cares about pipelines, nothing else) find someone else from the city council that is and keep the Mayor from answering questions about it.
- Get the leadership from both major BC parties to endorse it.

There were multiple reasons why it failed, but primarily the message in the Media was "Translink — and wastes your money" and nobody was saying anything at all to prove otherwise.

The 595 change is strange. I know that 208 Street badly needed service, but to reroute that bus and now to add stops to it seriously hampers a key regional connector. I guess they just don't have enough buses to create a new route from Langley Centre to Carvolth Exchange. I suppose it won't matter too much though once the 200 Street B-Line is introduced.

that would be far far in the future.. in fact, the 200th st B-Line is no longer in the 10 years plan. I guess they figured the corridor does not yet have demand for an express service. The ridership for 595 had been really low.. so low that a few of the cancelled routes actually have higher loads. Rather than cancelled it or turn it into a shuttle across Golden Ears Bridge, reroute it to a new area makes sense...

Oh damn, I didn't realize it wasn't used very well. I guess I just assumed it would be given its direct route, its connections and all the development on 200 Street. Hopefully it'll do better now!

Does building a Skytrain line improve the lives of residents of Prince George? Not really. Does subsidizing highway expansion so a dam can be built do anything for Vancouver? Absolutely (we get electricities).

Even though 58% of the provincial GDP is generated in Metro Vancouver, the role the rest of the province plays in supporting the city's economy is immense. Vancouver wouldn't even exist if it did not get it's start by being the port through which the goods to and from the rest of the province and country traveled. Without provincial demand for products, the port would be pointless. As Vancouver grew, it became the focal point for offices managing the resource economy of the province. Without the government supporting expansion in the province, the backbone of Vancouver's economy wouldn't have existed.

Vancouver isn't the great city it is because of some self made manifest destiny. Vancouver is a great city because BC is a great province. And we can't upset that balance by robbing the hills to dress the rich. We have become richer and better off than the province, we can afford to tax ourselves more to pay for the things we need.

It's been posted a few times. Although the more I look at it the more it feels... basic. Of course, with TransLink's financial situation, I'm fine with this than not having an upgraded exchange at all. But ideally there should be more weather protection for connecting passengers. One can dream...

The other thing I just noticed is that the autumn leaves from the new trees will clog and stain things up really quickly...

Yeah, congratulations to both Los Angeles and Seattle for their wise choises last week. LA's future rail map will look amazing.

For real, both those plans are absolutely transformational. I've been following them for a while and am very glad they got passed.

LA's especially is crazy. If it wasn't light-rail, that "after" map looks down right New Yorkian.

Aah...what could've been for us.

If LA had bought into UTDC's dream back in the 80's I can only imagine what the network would look like now with these new proposed expansions.

They really should consider LIMs on that black line though. The tunnel is going to be amazingly expensive at Sepulveda Pass, if they used a LIM based train on it the grade could be handled without a sweat on surface.

I wish, but in reality there was a conference for the Canada Urban Transit Association at Canada Place. Last Tuesday was the day for the "show and shine" part of it.

I wonder if such double-decker busses would be useful in Vancouver; on certain routes, anyway. West Brooadway comes to mind right away, as part of the B-Line system.

They're considering it, and have specifically named B-Line and express routes.

They would work for routes that require more capacity than a regular bus but not as much as an artic. double Decker100pax artic 120pax

Makes sense - same capacity as an articulated, but half the footprint.

That said, expect the NIMBYs to pop out of the woodwork and complain about them being "too tall" or some other garbage...
