I got a public meeting notice for the Tempe streetcar. It's for Oct 26th 6 - 8. At Tempe Transportation Center. It says construction is still schedule to begin late 2017.

Took the scenic route on my ride home and snapped a couple pictures.

The old Chamber of Commerce building has been demo'd and the CVS that is taking its place appears ready to rise.

McClintock Station moving quickly.

1000 Apache is now apparently "Rise on Apache." How do I get a job coming up with these names?

Motley coming along, but seems to be moving slowly.

That last photo showing all the construction on both sides of the street reminded me of Dubai. OK, well maybe not Dubai, but impressive in itself.

Drove to Mill to stroll and have drinks with my dad on the night of the ASU/WSU game...must say, the area was INSANE. It was my first time in Tempe in 4 years and my, my Tempe, how you have grown. Here are some observations:

Coming off Rural to Rio Salado, the area was already bustling. That Jefferson Heights apartments or whatever on the opposite side of the lake has s fence around the lot and dirt being moved. Marina Heights, is such a impressive change to the skyline coming across the bridge. Gone are the blighted parking lots, thank God! In the distance I could see the cranes on Apache Blvd. Took Rio to Mill, obviously the drive was nothing like it was 4 years ago. People strolling, the area has a canyon feel with A Mountain on one side and these large office buildings on the other.

Walked through downtown Tempe. More bars in the area, the students clung to a few and adults to the others. Hooters is gone. The plaza by West Six with Chase Bank has done a complete 180. Game night probably helped, but I remember walking through here to mostly empty retail space and a few people shuffling around. Now this place was hopping. All the patios were full and people were just hanging out, lounging, everywhere and there's an AMC. The West Six Towers were lit like a firework, must be close to full occupancy. It felt more like a city. Buskers, the infamous homeless, high schoolers, college alumni, young professionals.

I look forward to the evolution of Tempe into a full-fledged city. The difference of 4 years is astonishing.

The Cholla-replacement seems fine. Don't really have an opinion one way or another. But the 7S news is HUGE! Got to admit I had zero hope of that one happening. I feel like if it's built as approved this would be a game-changing development for Tempe.

That's great! West 6th is still lonely in the skyline.

Is 100 Mill officially dead yet? Can't believe they can't get their act together after all this time. Now we are left with a closed down Monti's and fenced up eye sore.

7S is the project with the most potential to finally transition Tempe, IMO. Two towers filled with professionals and a 3rd boutique hotel tower -- only the 3rd built out of dozens of proposals -- would add 365-day density in the part of downtown that needs to evolve into Tempe and not become an extension of ASU. It's too bad there weren't better proposals for the old M7 lot, Forrest/7th, and College/7th, because it could have actually ended up being the first connected corridor between Mill and College.

Either way, the design is fantastic and the well-placed retail will activate a large dead zone. If 100 Mill is dead as assumed (really? you can't finance 8 stories of office?), I wonder if 7S will steal Kimpton?

As for Cholla - another ASU fail. Rural Rd will eventually be a high capacity transit route connecting Chandler to Scottsdale with the Stadium District in beween. Developments now should be designed to accommodate a more pedestrian-friendly complete street. I don't know why ASU refuses to build anything mixed-use, but being across from the transit center, this should have had similar commercial sq footage as University Village, etc.

While I agree that it should be a high capacity transit route (preferably rail, but settle for BRT if that's what feasible), I don't see any indication it will become that. The same forces in Scottsdale who have resisted even studying light rail there are also resistant to BRT. A study recommending BRT for that corridor has essentially sat on a shelf since 2012. I think the best we can hope for in the foreseeable future is high-frequency service and extended hours on the existing Route 72 bus.

Also, this states that construction of Aura Watermark (old Club Rio site) should begin in March (page 75). And there is a mention of 100 Mill on page 29, I highly doubt that project is dead. Safe to say that filling Tempe Town Lake 20 years ago was a pretty good idea!

Awesome news. Fuck US Airways and the US Govt for allowing the merger with AA in the first place. US Airways was a homegrown-airline as America West first and it was a deep betrayal for me that they left. US Govt (and Obama - goodbye!) failed miserably in keeping the airline industry competitive. Good times are back with Trump looking out for us though

Yes I am hoping now with this 20 month long uncertainty period nice and solved, cleanly, we can see companies moving forward with expansion plans. AZ and Phoenix were doing very well the last 5 years or so and I see no reason to think this wont continue.

Coyotes announcing Arena deal today:

The reporting so far is vague--saying that the Arena will be "in the East Valley area south and east of Phoenix and Scottsdale that includes Tempe and Mesa..." Not sure if that is just defining "East Valley" as including Tempe and Mesa, or saying that the arena will actually be on the border. There were some reports a week or so ago that Karsten was close. I guess we'll see this afternoon.
