I heard on Global news this morning about an article in Vogue magazine promoting Saskatoon as a "cool" place to visit (along with Winnipeg). This is just another of a number of recent references to Saskatoon as being a trendy and up and coming place to visit! Kind of cool...

Tourism Saskatoon has been busy inviting travel writers to the city and wining and dining them. Don't know what they're spending on the initiative, but it seems to be helping to raise Saskatoon's profile.

Anyone know what the discolouration is on the sturdy stone building? Looks like mold. In any case, it looks absolutely terrible and I hope they do something about it. Check out google street view if you are curious what I'm referencing.

It's some sort of buildup on the stone, like how brick/stone buildings used to blacken with soot from air pollution in earlier days.

I like the building, I really do, but I'd like it more if it gleamed a more brilliant white.

It's just the nature of the stone. The entire university has the same problem where surfaces aren't straight up and down. Because sturdy stone is on an angle it ends up discoloured. I think it's sort of an oxidization or residue of chemicals from rain etc because it doesn't run off. The weathering doesn't bother me much, I think embracing the fact that materials show their age is interesting especially in an age where curtain wall rules.

Some of you may have noticed the gateway feature at 25th & Idylwyld taking shape, which consists of five arbours on the west side of Idylwyld, seating features, light posts and plantings.

I found renderings of the project from a city committee agenda from last year:

The arbours are interior-lit and look great at night. At the very least, it's nice to see the 25th St median finally get plantings.

thanks serrakat. I also love seeing buildings show their age...some show it much better than this. This looks like complete shit. pigeon shit!!!

Yes Saskatoon Tourism has definitely done well with garnering some good press and world wide attention...it's funny the standard press release always seems to involve: The James Hotel, Ayden, Hollows and 20th st gentrification like that's all Saskatoon is haha.

Speaking of putting Saskatoon on the world map (shameless plug alert), if noone else is going to do it sometimes you need to just do it yourself!

I always grew up and traveled thinking the Bes was a landmark that could stand alongside other world monuments and in a month, that will turn into a reality with this book. Also notice the placement to give a little nod to our 'Paris of the Prairies'

If they ever get around to beautifying Idylwyld, I think they will look even better. They're nice, but right now it kind of looks like someone put them there for Nuit Blanche and forgot to pick them up.

My expectations weren't high either, but I have to say I'm not impressed at all. It doesn't look quite as bad as the renovation where UNA pizza is but it's close. If it were downtown I wouldn't complain as much. It has no broadway soul to it and the scale of the building isn't cohesive to the 25' frontages around it. Expensive materials and new buildings don't equal good design to me.

The scale in the renderings look incorrect. according to Street view, the Clothes Cafe Building is actually taller than The St. Johns Music Building. The rendering shows the opposite which may indicate that the scale of the proposed building render is also out of scale with the rest of the street.

Another thing I find odd about the rendering is that the proposed building seems to mainly comprise ground floor retail and a restaurant on the upper floor which wouldn't really necessitate the need for underground parking like officespace or condos would. Yet we have seen a permit application for this site proposing for the underground parkade to be extended under the sidewalk.

I like it! It absolutely could have been a lot more sterile and this rendering indicates some pretty decent street/storefront connection and activity. Has there been any rumours about when this might be happening, or is it stalled along with so many other projects due to our current soft economy?

(and it is a way better "fit" then the renovated building that UNA is in....however, I do really like the alley patio area that Una added this year! )

You still need a basement so why not use it for parking? Employees and nearby residents/workers would be interested in these spots. Also does the building not pretty much fill the entire site. You must have some parking.

At least one restaurant in downtown Regina uses U/G parking for evening valet.

I will agree, the scale is a little off. Also something about the aesthetic design elements don't sit quite right, they are a little odd. Don't know exactly what it is but its just something. The design is ok, not great or horrible, but reminds me of something you may see built on Robson Street in Vancouver.

Yeah, I think the "Finestra" building looks great and would fit in pretty well with the older buildings currently in place on Broadway. I can imagine that a second floor seat at the window would be very popular during our pleasant summer days. Too bad that we simply don't get enough of those days. The operable windows look cool, but will likely remain closed for at least 250 days per year.

As for the parkade element - restaurants aren't the most reliable of tenants, so the owners likely want to keep it flexible for office usage if a restaurant goes belly up.
