there is a major factor at play to the point i would say its causal. there is an absolute, staggering explosion of unmarried black mothers since 1970 & especially since 1980. there is no consistent father figure for too many of todays black youth. white rates have remained stable.

This first one happened in my neighborhood overnight. I heard the sirens and police helicopter and probably would have heard the gunshot, had I been outside. By my count, this is the 27th homicide of the year, but the article says it's the 29th.

1 dead - Man shot and killed after apparent hit-and-run in South Austin Sunday - 10/30

Del Valle is getting crazy. It's a small community of 17,000 just east of Austin's airport. They've had 8 murders since September. Authorities think they're drug related.

1 dead - Body found in trunk of burning car in Del Valle Sunday - 10/30

1 dead - Woman found dead on roadway in Del Valle was shot, officials say - 10/31

Why are some Chicago neighborhoods turning into veritable war zones? Was the murder rate so high this past weekend because most of the cops were stationed at Wrigley Field?

Salinas, CA (pop. 155,662 ) - 33

This might be the worst year ever for Salinas. It's the worst since 1985, at least. The previous records were 29 murders in 2009, 25 murders in 2008, and 24 murders in 1994.

I'm guessing that like usual, most of it is due to gang violence between Nortenos and Surenos, who have long had a strong presence in Salinas, which is a relatively inexpensive agricultural city with tons of latino residents (from mexico mostly). I wouldn't be surpised if some norteno and sureno gangbangers who have been priced out of the Bay Area, and have family/friends in Salinas, have been moving in and causing extra conflict.

and the wild thing despite those numbers is that a good deal of Chicago is pretty safe and the mayhem is concentrated in a few really really bad areas.

Southside Chicago sort of has the notoriety of South Central LA in the 80s and 90s. Very similar actually.

Wow Louisville has literally doubled it's murder numbers in just 3 years. What the heck is going on?? Are we making a return to 90s numbers for many US cities? This could very well stop the suburb to city trend going on.

I read in the paper that a much of the murders and assualts are due to fighting between Latino gangs (mostly immigrants, legal and illegal, including the infamous and violent MS gang) and African-American gangs for turf and drug selling. The Latino gangs as they grow greatly in numbers are pushing into traditional black areas, so that causes violent clashes I guess. The same black-Latino gang clashes is also occurring in other cities nationwide, including L.A., S.F., Dallas, Houston etc. Of course innocent people get caught in the crossfire. Sad. Maybe others have more info on the gang clashes, and the role in the crime increases.

Article from July, but nevertheless ...

With violence up, Chicago police focus on a list of likeliest to kill, be killed
Quote:
After taking office in March amid one of the most tumultuous times in department history, Superintendent Eddie Johnson bluntly said, "We know who they are." He was referring to the approximately 1,400 individuals, many of them gang members, whom the department put on a list of those they say are most likely to commit or be targeted by violence. Those on that list, Johnson said, are driving the killings and shootings.

Indeed, officials said 85 percent of the more than 2,100 people shot so far this year had been placed on what police refer to as the "strategic subject list."
