I don't remember any of these connecting to anything other than Horseshoe to get to the mainland by ferry.

After weeks of waiting, I finally got to ride a Mark III from King George -> Stadium-Chinatown Saturday night. I got to experience the quietness and the big picture windows of car #416... for a total of two stations. A crowd of party-goers piled on in Gateway, then another at Scott Road, complete with amp, DJ station, disco ball, and deep-bass bhangra thumping all the way downtown. Kids swinging on the bars, dancing on the seats, and rocking the shiny new Skytrain car with a bollywood party. Not a single attendant in sight, which was unusual for that time of the night.

Skytrain parties are a tradition. Quit being such a party pooper.

http://globalnews.ca/news/3034742/dog-spooked-by-fireworks-runs-off-hit-by-train/

Instead of questioning the illegal use of fireworks and the state of off-leash dog parks (they should be fenced in), we are seeing the media along with many individuals criticize how Translink dealt with this. No joke, the updated story saw the focus shift towards how "inept" and "careless" the Translink employees were.

It continues to be disgusting to witness the constant barrage of smear campaigns against TransLink.

Totally agree. The real story is the illegal use of fireworks and a an off-lease dog area, next to a major rapid transit line that isn't fenced adequately to keep off-lease animals in. It wouldn't be a story if the dog had run onto a freeway and been run over by a car. Translink is being unfairly picked on by the media and it's time it stopped.

And the employees who spoke to the media (anonymously) - if I was a manager, and if I discovered who they were, I would fire them. you do not deal with grievances on procedure in your company by running to the media.

I read the link, what exactly did anyone criticize? Seemed pretty reasonable to me...note I did not read comments, were you talking about the comments?

http://globalnews.ca/news/3037310/dog-ki...ave-been-moving-says-translink-employee/

Quote:
The dog that was killed by an oncoming SkyTrain over the weekend didn’t need to die, according to a TransLink employee who heard the ordeal unfold on staff radios.

A SkyTrain worker who wishes to remain anonymous said the dog, Maggie, was hit by a train that should not have been moving.
To me, this is an unfortunate story, but it seems like the staff did all the could to get the dog off the tracks. Furthermore, it seems like that anonymous Translink employee wasn't even in the vicinity when the incident occurred. It's sickening that Global has turned a freak incident into smear story that fits their agenda, and make no mistake...it seems like Global/Corus Entertainment has an agenda, and someone desperately needs to call them out.

Meanwhile, this is how CBC and CTV reported it:

Quote:
A Trout Lake area dog owner is warning others to keep their family's best friend leashed or inside close to Halloween after their "beloved" Maggie was spooked by firecrackers, causing her to run off and get hit and killed by a SkyTrain Saturday.

What a contrast.

The Expo Line is currently down between Waterfront and Edmonds due to mechanical issues on multiple trains. Any scuttlebutt on how multiple trains can have mechanical issues all at the same time? Do communications issues count as mechanical?

Earlier tweets said they lost comms contact with all trains and would take up to 45 mins to restore...

Yeah, 12 trains timed out, across the two computers that control the Expo Line. Only a few in Surrey, so they were recovered quickly.

Of course CKNW runs a news story about this, making sure to point out that a Mark III was affected and then enumerating all the other problems that have happened since Mark III trains were introduced.

Did they really?
Other sources were saying that nearly all of the affected trains were Mark I cars....

TransLink says at least one of the failed trains in today’s shutdown is one of the brand new Mark III units, however Drennan says today’s problem is not related to any particular class of car.

It's like if a power outage took out several traffic lights, and they're pointing out that a Jeep was on the road at the time.

From what I'm reading, some misunderstandings/misappropriations are already rising from this new smear attempt. The Vancouver Sun follow-up that was outed today makes it seem like the control centre operator was the one who said "the dog is no longer a problem" even though both Global and CKNW's transcripts say that it was the on-location attendant who said that after discovering that the train had EB'd too late.

While there's something to be said about how the story brought forward by the visiting transit police has a difference from the various sources (including the anonymous source who - honestly - needs to identify themself, as long as they are anonymous, then I am just as willing to believe that Global/CKNW/Corus (or someone else masquerading to be an employee?) are completely fabricating/faking this report and this employee doesn't even exist).

There should definitely be some focus on the fact that there are unfenced, off-leash dog parks within striking distance of a SkyTrain guideway entry-point, and that illegal fireworks were being launched in the first place. Those are definitely the real reasons why this dog "shouldn't have died in the first place", not the actions of the control centre & on-location staff.

I'm sure the damage is already done. One of my friends doesn't have cable and Global is a channel that comes through well over the air. He believes their spin on it - that the biggest problem with this accident is TransLink. I pointed out about the illegal fireworks at Trout Lake (the park in question) and the fact that the anonymous source wasn't on the scene, but that didn't seem to make much difference. *sigh*

I like Translink as much as the next transit-oriented SSPer, but you have to admit the amount of problems they've had with the Mark IIIs already is pretty troubling.

They've got one month to figure this out, when Evergreen opens they don't have enough trains to operate all lines without utilizing Mark III trains.

Fanbois here need to lighten up a bit. It's the most natural question in the world to ask if yesterday's shutdown was to do with working the bugs out of new Mark III cars

I was hoping it would blow over this morning, but this story is picking up more steam.

One person on Facebook reposted the article, and the comments gave me no hope for the generation of Millennials that now hate Translink. Couple of individuals have used the word "murdered", "overpaid" and "incompetence." It's perplexing that no one continues to question the legitimacy of the story, even the legitimacy of the two anonymous witnesses...one of which is claiming to be a Translink employee that wasn't in the area when the incident occurred.

This story has garnered more press time than the many suicides that have occurred in the past...In fact, Translink is now being pressured to investigate the matter and adopt a procedure to deal with dogs on the tracks.
