Not sure what # this is for Lexington, but 15 y/o daughter of Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay was caught in crossfire and killed over the weekend.

That's awful! London Ontario with 400,000 and only 400km to the north is sitting at 5 and Metro London with 515,000 is sitting at just 6.

We had another person killed that same night. Lexington hasnt been over 20 in years but this year we will most likely be somewhere in the 30's.

Louisville KY my is now at 93. They had just 54 for the whole year back in 2014 and 84 in 2015.

The Safety Net in Ohio likely isn't as strong as in Massachusetts or New York.
(& of course Canada). Although for its size/ a US City that's actually not even that bad.

Not sure about that as a determining factor. Upsate NY cities like Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse have relatively high murder and violent crime rates. A lot higher than NYC does, usually.

Urban areas are best compared here, not cities due to different municipal government structure. Per demographia, London, Ontario is a city of 380,000 people. Meanwhile Columbus, Ohio is a city of 1,505,000 (defined by urban area, which use roughly the same density cutoffs).

Columbus violence nearly all happens in within the city limits, and not in the suburbs. The per capita rate would be lower if you brought in these jurisdictions.

Unfortunately, young African American males commit — homicides at rates 20x higher per capita than white males of the same age. this shows up in the statistics for a city like chicago. Fortunately the city is very safe for any other demographic.

That figure for London is just city proper. If we're doing apples to apples then London is about 500,000 or about one third the size of Columbus.

I agree with those that say London, Ontario is not really comparable to Columbus, Ohio. Really, Ottawa should be used and they are at 14, I think.

Then again, Greater Montréal and Greater Ottawa have spent the whole year with almost identical numbers despite Ottawa being almost 3 times smaller.

Still, we have had this conversation repeatedly, the USA and Canada are fundamentally different countries when it comes to murder and violence.

For example, where is Canada's equivalent song of "Born in the USA" - something like "We love Saskatchewan"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzfWx6DVEJM

Even "Toronto —" is a love letter compared to "Born in the USA" (amazingly used a Donald Trump rally in Edison, NJ last Saturday - Buzzfeed has covered it).

Oh, Quebec City and Greater Quebec City (about 1 million people) at zero but the police are still investigating a suspicious death on Oct. 7.

Ottawa is at 15 now.

London Ontario is best compared to a city like Syracuse NY and its metro area. Syracuse city proper is now around 25 and there are likely a few more in the metro as well.

The worst neighborhoods of Chicago where the vast majority of these murders take place have more in common with a Latin American slum or Middle Eastern war zone. But a couple miles away, in some cases less than a mile, it is completely First World with tremendous wealth and new high rises going up left and right. US cities are typically two-faced but Chicago is the largest and most extreme example IMO.

Let's not get carried away...

I think most people would much rather live in the worst neighborhood of Chicago than in some bombed out city in Syria or Iraq where you have to worry about things like ISIS death squads, suicide bombers, indiscriminate bombing and artillery fire, destroyed infrastructure, etc.
