Former RBC head office on King completed in 1964.

A little dirtier still but a consistent dirty look 110 Yonge completed in 1968

Consider the look of the TD Centre before the recent paint job, Commerce Court West's stainless steel, even Scotia's red granite.

Here's kind of a ridiculous proposal for 254 King Street East. I hope it gets shot down.

Not ridiculous at all... that's excellent.

Not a fan of the design and, neighbourhood context, it's even worse. It's just too big.

Contexts change. We would haven't our financial core if they didn't. Bring it on.

Context do change over time... lots of time; not every 5 to 10 years. The Kings are among the few boom intensification areas that has developed a cohesive, urban form and this inelegant pile does the last 15 years and a dozen or so developments later a disservice to what they have accomplished.

The core is admirable (although inhospitable). At the same time, it could have been so much better if the developers/planners of the time were more sensitive to the existing fabric.

That's almost laughably bad. Office park-worthy architecture, underwhelming site design, overbearing scale - and the place looks like it wouldn't be too livable either (just imagine being in one of those interior units beneath the bridges!). The only halfway redeeming quality are the tiered setbacks on the King St. frontage.

Good point. The CBD is great, but it'd be even better if it still had the old Star and BMO towers instead of the block spanning 2-storey FCP podium, for example.

But in any case, King East isn't the CBD, and a building of this insensitive scale doesn't fit in with the fine-grained context of any other new development in the area. Not that as lazy a building as that belongs anywhere, mind you.

We now have some images of the proposed Alldritt Tower for Edmonton!

This is the base of the tower, keep in mind that those buildings behind the tower do not exist.

This is what the tower might look like in the skyline.

Add this to the pie-in-the-sky pile. Used for fanning the ego of said 'developer' and attempting to gain a rezoning which over-values his land. Will never happen.

^ I give it the slight edge over The Edmontonian if only because they hired a better architect and are further in the process than it ever went (Alldritt is actually up at EDC today). Not much more than an edge, but an edge nonetheless.

I like the height but, why so many layers. It really looks busy and not very refined. I do like the base 18 storeys though.

I was looking for a project planned in Montreal and I found those.
Does anyone know their status? I'm curious.

Forgive me if they have already been discussed.

I like the idea of that new Edmonton proposal, but think the renders are pretty terribly done.

Edmonton leads the nation per capita in harebrained, fantastical tall building "proposals"

Can we just not on all of those... completely out of scale with surroundings. Density does not have to be a free for all to build the tallest. It seems like this city is getting a little trigger happy with the YXD closure of 2013.
