I hope that is just a black & white rendering of the College hotel project, surely they would want to make the hotel look inviting to stay at and not look like a penitentiary like the Holiday Inn downtown.

I always thought that parcel of land would be the most suitable for a skyscraper building in Saskatoon (over 100meters in height). It's far enough from YXE runway approach trajectory with downtown buildings height limits and it's in an neighbourhood with lots of highrises.

The hotel owner for this project, P.R. Developments, are also responsible for the downtown Holiday Inn so I would expect more of the same on this project with the exception that the College quarter hotel will have some Tyndall Stone installed on the Facade.

It started out looking promising. An unusual building from the start, sure, but promising.

And then cue the cost saving strategies.

I'm happy they added some stone onto the hotel, but did they really have to make it look exactly like the parkade?

The starphoenix article that came on my app showed thr backside of the hotel. It has a little more black to it...but the front looks like a big stone wall. That grey looks similar to the rest of campus...maybe thats what they were going for? Not sure. Overall... good to see this project go forward finally.

Another new hotel has quietly been added/opened to the growing inventory in Saskatoon. The Marriott Towneplace Suites has opened in Stonebridge off of Preston Ave. It looks like a pretty modern hotel. This now brings two hotels side by side that have opened on that street. I believe both these hotels in Stonebridge East are longer stay type hotels with kitchen's, etc.

With the Alt Hotel under construction downtown and the the 3 new hotels recently opened by the airport and the University Hotel just started, I cannot imagine that there will be much more hotel construction happening in Saskatoon for a long time.

Removing the sections could also open up the possibility of using the river for public transit.

I have had the pleasure of spending some time in Brisbane, Australia and there are 2 things that "river city" has certainly got right, that could/should be implemented in Saskatoon! One is their public transportation system that utilizes their river:

https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/public-transport/citycat-ferry-services

And the other is their development of a "city beach/recreation area"...this could be implemented in either downtown Saskatoon, or where people are already gathering along the river in the summer by the 42nd Street bridge sandbars.

Oh to have progressive thinkers leading our city....

I guess one big difference is winter. This would have to be seasonal. Winnipeg has a private, seasonal service with 7 docks, although I doubt commuters use it.

did you hear any word on the rest of the quarter with the other student mid-rise condo units? i read a "dated" news article saying they are looking for developers to begin the rest of the college quarter residence?

just curious if you have any inside info

Here's the *slightly* less offensive College Drive exposure of the U of S hotel:

That's definitely not as bad, though there is still way too much grey. It reminds me of the style the university has implemented for the Health Sciences and STM expansions: a mix of the classic stone siding and large modern windows. At least they're consistent, almost?

I LOVE the idea of Summer water bus or even water taxis like in Fraser Creek in Vancouver.

The only problem in Saskatoon is that weir blocks the northern half of city from using river for travel

I happened to be by Diefenbaker Park the other day and it reminded me that I had thought the Optimist club was to have started the work on the Sledding/Tubing park for the hill? Anyone know if this is in limbo? Haven't even really heard anything in terms of a fundraising push for this? Too bad...was hoping we might have something ready for this winter season coming up.

The nicest building to go up in Saskatoon lately that nobody's talking about:

The four storey clinic being constructed directly across Avenue P from St. Paul's Hospital.

I haven't had a chance to snap any photos, but I will the next time I'm back that way.

This is somehow news to me, but you're right.
