Will there be no parkade associated with the hotel?

Bolting underway on new Traffic Bridge, demolition of remaining span planned for November

Saskatoon StarPhoenix
October 8, 2016

As bolting operations get underway on the steel trusses of Saskatoon’s new traffic bridge, demolition of the last remaining span of the old bridge is planned for next month.

The last remaining span will be torn down using equipment instead of explosives, Saskatoon’s director of major projects said.

In the version of the plans I saw, there is not a underground parkade under the hotel (which seems to be confirmed given the work already completed on the site). However, there will be a stand alone multi-level parkade built between the new hotel and the existing stadium parkade.

I know the developer worked very hard on this project to bring it in at a viable budget. My speculation is that the lack of a large excavation required to accommodate an underground parkade saved a significant amount of money in the project budget.

It will be a pretty bridge. Far more character than any other span build in the city in the last 20 years. It will look like a bridge as opposed to an overpass.

I agree Casper, I would have liked to see something a little more modern looking but this is far better than another slab of concrete crossing the river.

I still think a big opportunity was missed.

Why they felt a need to recreate something that was utterly utilitarian and frankly ugly is beyond me. I believe it was an excuse to cheap out.

This was certainly not a cheaper option. Quite the opposite.

Agreed. The other bridges are the real missed opportunities.

I would have liked to see something truly unique, but the new Traffic Bridge was always going to be either a replica or a plain concrete bridge. Considering the circumstances we are lucky to have gotten something that at least looks different.

It is a comparatively inexpensive bridge. I suppose that is partially because the existing piers are being re-used.

Apparently thats no longer the case. I guess it was a lot more time and effort to fix the piers than to tear them down and build from scratch. They cancelled the pyro demo last month so they can just rip the rest of the structure down manually.

I will try to find the SP article and post it when I get a better chance.

Only 4 sections up for crane at college quarter today due to a 200 plus mobile crane we had ordered to erect the crane was broken down at the mines so hopefully tommorrow the next 4 sections plus an 8 ft section will be in place with the cab as well. Bringing it to 168 ft above ground
