I've been to the Swiss Chalet on Kensaton once before and didn't think it was anything special. And we've never been back. I always used to salivate over the commercials on TSN growing up. Then we got one and it was blah.

Winnipeg has had Swiss Chalet for almost 30+ continuous years. There was a brief gap more recently when Shopper's bought out the location on Pembina near Julibee. They used to run out of the old airport and had a long standing location on McPhillips near where Jolibee will soon open. Odds are really high if you were watching their commercials on TSN they had a location open in the Winnipeg at the time. That said, that you wanted to go to Swiss Chalet and did not even know they were in Winnipeg speaks volumes about the marketing problems Cara has in Winnipeg.

^ I'm fairly certain the Swiss Chalet on Kenaston opened literally a few days before the one in the old airport terminal shut down back in October 2011... if I'm right, that means Winnipeg has had an uninterrupted flow of delicious rotisserie chicken with that mysterious Swiss Chalet sauce for over 30 years. Bowman should stage a ceremony to commemorate that.

FWIW I don't understand how one could not like Swiss Chalet. Yeah, everything else on the menu besides chicken — but you can avoid that by ordering the one thing they're good at: rotisserie chicken!!

Any news on what's replacing the former Sals Express at Pembina Village?
Sals Express closed late July, and they have contractors working on the location.

Ya when I was young I would have zero clue there was one on McPhillips or the airport. Also, I had a family friend who worked at Cara and I thought all they did was airplane food. Now whenever I hear Cara I associate them with crappy plane food.

That's odd, those are CanadInns joints, and the Canad Polo Park is definitely not short on restaurants. Maybe they thought about doing that before they turned half of TYC into a Tavern United.

Also, Dhoom on Donald (former Pizza Hut) has closed and there is another Indian restaurant opening called Spice Empire or something lol. Not sure if it's just a reno/rebrand or if it's new owners. "The Place To Enjoy" never seemed to inspire many people to go.

It was only a matter of time for Dhoom to be doomed.

When they opened in 2012, which is when I moved out of downtown, I loved their decor and the Indian food was about 3rd choice - East India Co. 1st, Charisma 2nd.

They never seemed to have the selection of desserts like the other two places have.

Maybe that's why they failed.

They've re-painted the entire building black, wonder how long till the 'Hut red roof starts showing again.

Is it really that difficult/costly to remove the signature Pizza Hut roof from a building? I see posts on the Internet of old locations being repurposed into something else but keeping that ugly signature roof.

^I mean if the peak is built into the interior then yeah probably would be. Can't imagine a local place spending that money. Obviously if it were to be a chain taking over, they would want to get rid of it. I'm also pretty sure they aren't even using the "hut" in their new designs anymore, flat roof is probably cheaper.

That old Pizza Hut in westwood is now a dollaram i believe but you can still see the hut roof under it.

Looks like they only way the remaining partners will reopen it "under new Management" will be if they buy the assets that are listed in today's paper at the sheriffs auction on Oct 12.

^^^ Yeah, I have heard that things have now gone south so a re-opening sounds doubtful.

Bad service where you are ignored and sub par food might have played into it ! Staff talking to each other and texting..
That had been my experience as well as by several people I know.
The place and setting is nice.

Chachi's is opening 2 locations in Winnipeg - Outlet Collection and Polo Park. For most who've probably never heard of it, it's a great little sandwich shop (ingredients are fresh and the mac and cheese is amazing). I usually try and head there a few times while out in Calgary.

Wonder what will move out of Polo... Arby's or Jugo Juice shutdown? Or somewhere else in the mall?

Don't see anything on the leasing map:

I'm surprised at the number of retail stores that have space hidden within the mall (Basement, back corridors)

Quiksilver is closed and right by the food court, maybe they'd go in there and have seats in there like the old A&W by the Bay.

There is an almost zero chance that Chachi's would take over Jugo Juice at Polo Park. Jugo Juice is an MYT brand. MYT operates so many food court banners they would be rebranding the space before giving up the lease. As it stands they are behind around half the outlets in the Polo food court and could easily replace every outlet there and still have more banners. About the only banner I can't think of a direct replacement from their banners would be KFC and that is likely more my ignorance of their brands than a lack of format from them.

^Yeah I was just trying to guess the least busy places. KFC is owned by Yum! which also owns Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, there are already a Pizza and Taco place there (don't know if any have exclusivity like A&W) so I doubt that. I'm putting my money on Quiksilver.

To this day I still can't wrap my head around why Polo let Geox go in the food court when they likely could have fit 2 more vendors there.
