The Evergreen website says that the Millennium Evergreen extension will be in service before Christmas. No specific date, but that is earlier than the "early 2017" that was promised due to the delay with the tunnel. So looks like Skytrain Mellenium trains won't be terminating at Lougheed for too long, before running through to Lafarge Park - Douglas.

Get on the train in Surrey (Zone 3), travel to Coquitlam (Zone 3).

Is it a 2-zone ride or a 1-zone ride? You enter Zone 2 in New Westminster, so you'd probably get fined if you were caught in that area, but I'd be curious to know what the fare gates will do. For the majority of cases, it won't matter as you have to tap out at Columbia, but k

- Cross-platform Transfer @ SFU/University Station

- Cross Platform Transfer at Royal Oak ( Possibly up/down transfer could be possible earlier without tapping out? )

- Total 1 Zone fare? ( Travel started and ended in Zone 3 )

You're crossing into zone 2 when you enter New Westminster so I believe it's supposed to be a 2-zone fare (which makes sense given the distance involved) but I wonder how the SkyTrain software will handle this?

Note that the same would apply from Richmond to Burnaby via SkyTrain, but I believe a tap out is required at Waterfront there.

It should be an easy software fix, in any case ( simply create a pseudo Zone 3a, Zone 3b for Coquitlam and Surrey ) and make any taps between these two 2 zones, but I am curious if there is indeed a protocol for this kind of transit-hacking.

You wouldn't be tapping out at Columbia unless you were leaving the station - transferring from one platform to the other doesn't require a tap out and another tap in. I also wonder what TransLink has planned for this type of trip.

It's probably a valid thing to consider, but it's more likely it will become a pay-by-distance thing in the future.

To be honest, Olden Retriever doesn't seem like throwing that date out there for no reason. At least for me, I'll take whatever he says and see if that is true a few weeks prior to Nov 20 -- with the expected fanfare, Mk IIIs (just for the big occasion), and Christy photo-ops (yeah, I will be voting orange for the first time since I became eligible to vote in BC).

Now that I have replaced my home address from Tri-City to Van City, it will definitely be better and easier to visit my friends who remain entrenched in Pomocopoco... not to mention about the microbreweries at Rocky Point Park.

The fare gates only consider where you tap out. How many times you cross the zone boundary is irrelevant. For example, if you take the skytrain at Joyce and ride it all the way to surrey and back, and tap out at 29th Ave, it'll only be a 1 zone fare. The system doesn't know that you travel all the way to Surrey, and it doesn't need to know because you haven't tapped out yet.

In your scenarios, although you would save $1.25 by changing trains at Royal Oak (or Edmond) without having to tap out, you would have to spend more time in the system. It's a time vs money thing.

I know that Columbia doesn't have an island platform, but I thought you could always go to the other platform without the need to tap out. The gates are right at the extrance.

Not sure if that would be the same thing at Lougheed - Im pretty sure the stationhouse allows for a cross-platform transfer without tapping out (at least I think thats the case for the North Stationhouse.)

However, there is only one path between Surrey and Coquitlam and just by tapping out anywhere along the extension, it knows you completed a cross platform transfer at Lougheed.

Even tweeted at Translink and they had no details.
