The best thing that ever happened to Mohawk College is leaving, Rob MacIsaac. Mohawk College lost is HHS gain.

Disappointing news for Mohawk. He's improved that school so much during his time there.

Definitely a loss for Mohawk, but he's got the school set on a terrific course.

I think HHS will benefit greatly not only because of MacIsaac's capable leadership and visioning, but because he's from "outside" the medical community - a fresh perspective is never a bad thing.

That's a nice little pay rise. Do you think there's something else he's angling towards? I certainly don't think he'll be throwing his hat in the ring for mayor any time soon.

Mohawk announces Brantford campus departure

On Tuesday, the college announced plans to relocate all remaining full-time programs to Hamilton this fall.

The move, which will affect around 350 community service students as well as 20 staff, will save the college $1 million annually and help it curb a projected $5-million shortfall in its 2014-15 budget.

Mohawk has slowly been phasing out of Brantford since 2010, when it relocated its skilled trades program to Stoney Creek. It has since moved its graphics, justice and wellness programs to Hamilton, as well as closing its Elgin Street campus.

I took advertising at Mohawk and wondered by the graphic arts program and their computers were in Brantford instead of complementing the advertising program's creative classes on Fennel.

Without seeing pictures I can't imagine how it takes $3.3 million and five years of planning for four 'large' bus shelters with no building attached?
And they talk about funding it with the Metrolinx Quick Wins fund!

To make up for lost parking they reconfigured and added spots elsewhere... I guess they don't expect anyone to actually use the buses instead of arriving by car as they have since the college was built in the 1970s.

The explanation of being able to provide future connections to GO doesn't make sense since Mohawk already has a connection to the Hunter St. and West Harbour GO stations via the 20 A-Line route.

I'd love to see improved transit amenities and connections but it looks like they are just moving the already convenient stops in front of the main doors to the far corner of the college property.

Four routes will use the transit hub, as per LikeHamilton's post in August.

"The Mohawk College Transit Terminal will include bus bays and terminals, as well as rider amenities such as shelters, real-time service information and ticket machines. The new transportation hub will be located at the corner of West 5th and Fennell and will be used by four HSR routes. Routes 20 A-LINE EXPRESS, 21 UPPER KENILWORTH, 33 SANATORIUM, and 35 COLLEGE will all use the new terminal."

A lot has changed since I graduated in 2011. This building was going to start construction next year. Looks like there is still lots of room for growth.

Ottawa gives Mohawk College $20M for new technology lab building

Mohawk College is set to receive $20 million from the federal government for new infrastructure at its Fennell campus.

Filomena Tassi, MP for Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas along with MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, Ted McMeekin, made the announcement Friday morning. The ministers were highlighting the benefits of its new Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund.

Mohawk will break ground on a new Centre for Partnership and Innovation. It will build and renovate 120,000 square feet of labs and classrooms with a focus on technology. Construction will include a new 90,000 square foot building, the largest addition to the campus since its doors opened five decades ago.

"The Government of Canada's record-setting $20 million investment in Mohawk will support the largest ever renewal of labs and classrooms in our 50-year history," said Mohawk College President Ron McKerlie in a statement. "This renewal will allow Mohawk to educate more students than ever before in high-demand technology programs and put our students to work with even more industry partners on job-creating and prosperity-building applied research projects."

Construction will begin in October with the building expected to be open in Fall 2018. It will also be the area's first zero carbon building, generating potentially more energy than it consumes.
