Hazmat call, fire at construction site stops Carling, Preston-area traffic

Roads are closed around a construction site at Carling Avenue and Preston Street Wednesday afternoon as firefighters tackle a hazardous materials incident first reported as a loud noise and smoke.

Carling Avenue is closed westbound from Bronson to Sherwood and Preston Street from Pamilla Street to Prince of Wales Drive. Police are asking that people avoid the area.

An Ottawa fire spokeswoman said 911 calls came in shortly after noon reporting a fire and firefighters on the scene quickly deemed it a hazardous materials incident. She did not immediately know the substance involved but the hazmat team is on the scene and emergency responders are taking air-quality readings to ensure their own and public safety.

Witnesses tweeted that firefighters were trying to extinguish spray-foam insulation that had been applied to a foundation that’s under construction.

It’s the same construction site where Oliver Bruneau, 25, was killed by falling ice earlier this year.

I think I heard somewhere that the outside date for the units is in 2021; so Claridge has got time.

I know many may laugh and chalk this up to superstition but various Asian cultures, particularly the Chinese, don't want to buy properties that have seen people passing away, for whatever reason. Now the circumstance of young Olivier is tragic and is certainly no fault of Claridge but news travels fast in this day and age of social media and I hope there is no more setback and this building got completed on time.

Given the age of human civilization in China, pretty much any parcel in the country has probably had someone die on it before.

Plus, any high rise building with hundreds of units will probably have someone die in it within a few years of construction. I don't want to sound culturally insensitive but that's a very irrational rule to abide by...

Weren't there people in Vancouver who opposed a condo building because it was beside a hospital or something because of this superstition?

Unfortunately, superstitions are still common in a good number of cultures. Apparently, "fan death" is still a concern for people in South Korea despite it being a ridiculous superstition. Some buildings in Asian countries might not have a 4th floor, while some buildings in Western countries don't have a 13th.

As the builder, they should have people expecting the site regularly to ensure quality, progress and safety. So yes, as far as I'm concerned, Claridge gets a big part of the blame.

Your points are well taken but the story of young Olivier is well-publicized, unlike somebody passing away in any appt that will not make (or barely makes) the news. Will people remember this 3 or 4 years from now when the building is complete? I don't think so but it is also not hard to dig stuff up either.

I don't mean to trivialize young Olivier's passing but it is what it is. People will find whatever reasons to buy/not to buy a condo or into a building. This is just another angle that I was responding to Stevenson's "cursed" comment.

All the remediation is complete to make the site safe. Concrete Forming crews and others were back working in the excavation as of yesterday. Rebar was being delivered on flat bed truck. Dump trucks by today.
