Is So LA village ever going to break ground? (also is that downtown or metro I'm not 100% sure)

Hotel Fig Gets Upscale Dining, Bar Options

The Hotel Figueroa is reopening in December after a massive renovation.

Now comes word that its dining options will be overseen by chef Casey Lane, who ran The Parish in the Fashion District before it closed abruptly in 2013, while the drinking side will be run by Dushan Zaric, best known for his Employees Only project in New York City.

Lane will lead two restaurants dubbed Breva and Veranda, the former with a focus on Basque and Spanish flavors, and the latter leaning toward Italian pizzas and pastas, per a report from the website Eater L.A.

Zaric, meanwhile, is overseeing four bars, including a lobby space named Bar Figueroa and a smaller, bespoke option the hotel is calling Bar Alta.

The big-name additions portend that Hotel Fig will become more of a Downtown destination than a hidden gem.

It's currently in appeal hell. It'll prevail though I'm sure.

This is the description from LA Downtown News:

Quote:
The 13-story, 240,000-square-foot edifice, built as a YWCA hotel for women travelers in 1927 and later transformed into the Moroccan-themed Hotel Figueroa, is undergoing a restoration of its original Italian Renaissance facade and Spanish Colonial interior.

Updated W Hotel Los Angeles Proposal Features Massive Wrap-Around LED Screen

Quote:
An updated set of renderings for the proposed W Hotel Los Angeles development reveal the addition of what a massive wrap-around LED screen that will envelop the lower perimeter of all three towers central to the Gensler-designed project. Brought forward earlier this week by Chinese developer Shenzen Hazens, the latest addition will most certainly bring a flashier, more international element to the project, as the architectural video screen treatment has long been a staple in Asian metropolises, with an increasing presence beginning to take root in North America and elsewhere.

I was browsing some failed proposals and I found these two renderings for residential towers back in the early 2000s. I have never seen them before, and I wasn't sure if you guys have so I thought I'd share.

I can see why someone might not like them, but I would kill to have these guys put up. I am not quite sure what ended up taking their place, and if that lot is still up for grabs I hope they keep these guys in mind.

I feel like those were proposed for the current Metropolis site, but I could be wrong about that.

Dating myself... That pair of skyscrapers were a mid 2000's proposal known as City House and Olympic. At first they were a pair of the taller tower and then they were proposed as you see in your pic.

Err. Someone beat me to it.

Have we seen them before? Ha! These were like the biggest obsession on the LA forum for about a year and half. They're like the poster children for unrealized LA unrealistic dream projects.

The spat of projects announced this week alone tell me DTLA is heating up, not slowing down.

What an exciting slate of proposals!

I love them, especially the 2 in the top photo. The building on the right in the top photo looks like a taller version of the Carew Tower in Cincinatti. These are the kind of Art Deco towers L.A. might have built in the Roaring 1920s if not for that silly 150 foot height restriction (except for City Hall). Build them! They would look especially good in the Broadway Historic District, with all the old movie palaces. Offices/condos/hotel. People would love it. Everybody likes the Art Deco look & the 1920s have charisma. Of course, inside everything would be spanking new. Just the facade would be retro.

Those were the days. I remember liking the City House and Olympic but their time has come and gone. Perhaps, as the city matures and develops its urban fabric, shorter versions of these can make their way onto vacant lots in the Arts or Warehouse districts.

I remember when those towers first showed up here. Liked them a lot at the time. Now...not so much. At least at street level, it looks terrible. Chop off the tower portion and you would have a de facto Geoff Palmer building with massive tacky parking entrances. Looks like it could be in Vegas.
