Oh, the sinking library urban legend, lol.

We don't want the C-train to come out of the tunnel with a hook hanging off the door handle! We don't want the cafe to sell both Pop Rocks and Coke, since kids will have them both and explode! We don't want them to forget to put bars on the sanitary main so that alligators don't come up from the sewers!

Yep, this is an absolute urban myth. Engineers certainly factor in loads, especially with libraries and especially given that the building itself will weigh many more times what the books do.

I was reminded of MacKimmie Library's imminent collapse at least once per month while going to U of C.

Well, that is a bit different, it wasn't designed to hold pure library floors, so over time the whole "we can't renovate offices away, and get rid of lighters things like microfiche storage and have only books on too many floors" became "haha we didn't account for books".

Already?! Can't wait to see it done.

In the past few months I've had the chance to explore (1) Snohetta's NYC 9/11 memorial, (2) Halifax's new library, and (3) Snohetta's new Ryerson student learning centre. Needless to say this has left me very excited for NCL's completion. We are in for a tasty treat.

While there are many highlights of Snohetta's designs (a dramatic awareness of their context, foremost) I will say that I was slightly underwhelmed regarding Ryerson's cladding. To me it looked great from far away (which is how most people will experience it), but the white material had a kind of plastic bus-stoppiness up close. That was only my first impression. Also, I'm hoping the wood underpanel turns out like the Canada Line stations or Richmond Stadium. What kind of wood/material are they using?

Some glazing has been installed on the south side of the new library, and looks like there is more on site waiting to go up. It is visible from 9th Ave. Sorry, no photo from me, just reporting it in the hopes that someone with a camera can swing by to get a picture. it is not really visible in the webcams either unfortunately.

The first picture is the south face. And yeah, when I look at the renderings, the renderings seem to show a blank grey wall. So this is a nice upgrade.

haha thanks man. I was back home in Ontario for a month and started Uni at U of C as soon as I got back. Been really busy starting up a gay rugby team and joining a fraternity so I haven't been on much. I do plan on doing a city-wide update before the snow starts though, so stay tuned!

Really loving the look of the glazing in person. We are going to have one of Snohetta's architectural beauties in this city when all is said and done! Way to go Calgary!
