The islands were a common pasture during most of the seigneurial regime (until the 1850s). Thereafter they were cultivated by families who owned the land.

The islands were bought by the govt. of Quebec in the 70s and are leased since then to the former owners for sweet corn production. A part of the islands became a provincial park, and the rest was cultivated. There were discussions about the govt. wanting to end the leases and expand the provincial park around 2011-2014. I don't know if it actually happened since the lands still seem to be cultivated on the picture.

As for the bridge, there's half of the pont-tunnel L.-H.-LaFontaine that links Boucherville to Charron island (the westernmost island) by bridge, and the other half between the island and Montreal is a tunnel.

The farmers didn't cross the bridge : they operated small barge that went from the centre of Boucherville to the islands.

An article from La Presse

There is also a golf course on the islands. I think there are short ferries between some of the islands.
They still had the sign for the hotel when I drove the tunnel last fall.

Hamilton always looks post apocalyptic to me. I think it might be because of the tallest tower but it could also be the general brutalist appearance of the highrises combined with the escarpment cutting it off and making it look like an outpost.

Yeah already seen photo tours of there before. Some interesting photos of old Soviet submarine bases too. The craziest though is images of Fukushima. There's one of a grocery store and it's just covered with spider webs. As an arachnophobe there is nothing more terrifying than the thought of giant, radioactive spiders cocooning entire cities.

Been loving this informal "aerial skylines pics feat. great bodies of water" battle in the last 2 pages.

Toronto is just yuge. Montreal is finally looking bulky.

Yep and we are totally blessed when it comes to spiders in most of Canada.

I don't think it's got any more of a formal name than simply "croix du Mont Royal". So, it's just called the cross that's on top of that mount. I suppose that's its name: "Cross".

Also, nice views from above and from Mt. Royal!
