I see on CBC that Council is looking for a new City Hall location - not sure why they just can't stay where they are and downsize the space? I would think it would be in their best interest to not move and renegotiate with the landlord.....anyone know what's really going on here?

Yeah, caught this on the CBC this past weekend.. great wake up call for SJ'ers that have yet to realize the city is on the the move. Stop complaining about what the city doesn't have and enjoy all it has to offer!

It may be the beginning of a cookie trail???.... and at the end of the trail sits a brand new city hall. Easing the masses into the idea perhaps.

Can anyone explain to me how you quote two different people in the same text?

Well they are tearing down some of the 'peel plaza' properties they bought a few years ago. Make way for the new Taj Mahal.

If they try, I will personally chain myself to a bulldozer! I can't believe they would consider building new. I sent a note to a Councillor today saying just stay where you are and lease less space....he came back and said that is one of the options. You sure wouldn't know it by the reports - everything I've read says new location etc.

Well, you know how it is, when you have a city with full employment, no poverty, no run down areas, low office vacancy, a vibrant downtown with no store vacancy or empty building lots, oodles of cash coming in from a low property tax rate and excess modern recreational facilities, the obvious next step is to blow years of focus and millions of dollars because you have nothing else more important to occupy your time than to move and save half a percentage point on the city budget.

When you're wondering why many people don't want to live in Saint John proper, you should put "we don't trust Saint John city council and management to do the right thing" near the top of the list.

There is a set of three foundations going in on Prince William Street across from Three Sisters park - I assume town home development. Nice to see yet another empty lot disappear.

The fewer empty lots on the peninsula the better. Looking forward to this development along with the others coming up in the future.

I saw that too. I also saw that the building to the north of the new foundations on the corner has a new electrical service going in. Looks like a total Reno. I must say that a lot of buildings all through the uptown are getting spruced up...paint jobs, brick work, you name it. In the 8 years we've been here it's the most activity we've seen....hopefully a sign of good times to come.

I have lived here most of my life and I have never seen anywhere close to the level of investment and development happening in the core right now.

To me what is also amazing is the complete change in attitude of the majority of citizens on their views of uptown and what is happening. Even my parents who are lifelong west siders now feel obliged to spend time and money in the core.

Absolutely great stuff!!

Well, there might be a reason why Moosehead is moving forward with their waterfront microbrewery project. Maybe they got wind that something for the coast guard site is actually in the works.

My pipe dream: that construction on a Fundy Quay development would start while the IOL HQ is still going up, putting two tower cranes uptown. By Saint John standards, that'd be a veritable construction boom!

There are 2 high rise buildings planned for Fundy Quay. So that would be two there. Couple with Harbourfront Residences Phase 2, PLUS the IOL HQ, and we'd have four.

I may be the eternal optimist but this time I'm actually kinda, sorta believing that this may be true....I think they were waiting for a "hotel partner" and with the opening of the Fundy Trail from St. Martins to Alma, we should see an explosion of tourism. As we know, most people coming to The Maritimes go directly to Nova Scotia, bypassing Saint John - now, they will be able to come here, go to St. Martins and continue to Alma where they can hope back on the Trans Canada to Nova Scotia. I have a friend who owns a B&B in Alma and he expects the Trail to be a game changer.....we shall see.....
