McTavish Reservoir. It does look like a cesspool, doesn't it?

Around 100 years ago, that church on the bottom right was the tallest building in Toronto, and 60 years ago it was the 3rd tallest building.

I thought it was a cesspool or sewage treatment plant or something. That's nasty looking drinking water.

That's not water. The reservoir is covered by ground. It's usually a publicly-accessible lawn, but I guess they're working on something.

Nice Calgary shots. Arguably up there for the second most impressive skyline in the country.

Okay that makes more sense. The sand or whatever from the pic looks like muddy or brackish water. Reading the article harls linked to it sounds like they are converting it to AstroTurf.

That reservoir has been there since the mid 19th century, at least.

I think I've never noticed it before because normally it's green instead of the colour of sand and or a cesspool.

I seem to recall a 19th century shot from Mt. Royal that showed the water in the reservoir being open to the elements. It was kind of like the Central Park Reservoir.

It would've been kind of cool if they kept it like that and built a track around it, but I'm not sure if the McTavish reservoir stores water for treatment or already treated water (in which case, open exposure would be impossible).

The entire Downtown peningsula during a downpour. Taken from the The Mark's (tallest building in Yaletown) 40th floor sub-penthouse. What a dense Downtown with many architectural layers we have and our two tallest buildings are even hidden from the view by One Wall Centre!
