not all entrince's to the airport were closed that day my mother says she drove out on it taking photos of the backlog that day dunno what ever happend to her photos all got lost when she sold the house... including a tub of flood photos

and didnt they evacuate portage and main at one point?

Looks surprisingly similar to stuff that's still on my old Flickr page ... that's why I don't make things public anymore. My images being copied and sold on eBay was kind of the last straw.

Anyway, it's not really so bad if people are enjoying them, I guess.

I guess they just upload the scans and print them out on photo paper. You can restrict uploads from Flickr now to low resolutions, like Bryan Scott does, but in the early years we were all so naïve...

They do this all the time with public domain images, such as the millions made available by the Library of Congress.

I find this news mildly shocking. I can't believe there's actually a market for photos culled from Flickr and printed on paper. I was thinking maybe coffee mugs or other such items...

Downtown would be a much different place if the U of M still had a large presence, and if more of the precious buildings we lost were kept.

Probably, although many places with much better downtowns today kept a far lower percentage of their "precious buildings" than Winnipeg did.

Maybe not so much no pride as no money. A lot of buildings downtown have changed hands for peanuts, especially before the 2000s. So you end up with individual owners of substantial buildings who can't easily undertake renovations or overhauls. A prime example is the Dayton Building... a small time businessman isn't going to reclad and redo that building from top to bottom.

True. I hope more business leaders (like Pollard) and developers (Alston) step forward and redevelop the remaining eyesores. It really comes down to incentives, which has helped, and continues to help downtowns all over the US (one of my favorite examples is Grand Rapids, MI).

I agree with you about the lost potential on Main north of Logan, and south on the east side. The stretch in the above photo is almost completely intact, except for the Modern Block in the centre of the photo. It burned down in the early 70s (stuff happens) and the United Way building is there now. So, for this stretch at least, much of the potential is still there.
