Working in the Trinity drive area, employees at Superstore, Kent and Costco often mingle and talk together be it on smoke break or whatnot, and the general consensus from Costco employees seems to be that they will in fact be moving to Harrisville Bvld.

I didn't get a chance to comment earlier, but these aerial drone pictures are really very useful for discussion purposes - keep it up Budyser!

I'm sure it's just perception based on the camera being closer to this side but from the Cordova shot, their cleared lot looks to be nearly as big as Day&Ross. In fact, it looks almost large enough to fit the new Costco on the bottom right with parking from the bottom left up to Mapleton. There'd be no room for anything else or for the Costco gas bar but I don't see why are want one so bad anyways, seems to me there's not much profit in selling gas

Champlain Place update:

- Naturalizer Shoes is closed for renovations.
- It looks like the mall sales location for the Steele Auto Group Jaguar/Land Rover/Porsche dealership has closed. It's interesting to speculate on what this might mean. Personally, I'm thinking that the decision by Tri-Star to open a Mercedes dealership in the city might have given Steele cold feet.

All in all, things remain very quiet on the new store front at Champlain Place. There are more store vacancies at the mall than I've ever seen before. Occupancy is still greater than 90%, but the number of vacancies is unprecedented. Either Champlain is retooling and preparing to reshuffle for new tenants, or there is something seriously wrong keeping new retailers from coming to the mall........

Regarding the mall I have been thinking the same thing. The mall as of late has been a disappointment I am thinking the mall might be in decline but I don't want to speculate. Usually when a retailer would pull out a new one would be right behind but now it's not th case. I wish that Cadillac Fairview would come out and announce a plan regarding the malls future.

Not Moncton related retail, but here's an interesting render of a redesigned podium for the Maritime Centre at the foot of SGR in Halifax.

Could Simon's be making their first foray into the Maritime region???

I've often thought there might be an outside chance that Simon's might consider Moncton in their expansion plans too. Moncton is a touch small as a market for one of their stores, but the chain is Quebec based, and our Francophone Acadian population could make Moncton at least somewhat attractive for them to consider....

Between this and IKEA, Halifax is really starting to play with the big boys. Yet another reason for Moncton to keep on it's toes.

With Highfield Square gone, and the homeless being chased off from Main street it seems they have made a new base at Champlain Mall, and that can't help the image of the mall.

Regarding the post above about a Simon's store in Halifax - I'm afraid I was misled by an overly enthusiastic Halifax forumer.

The render of the new podium for the Maritime Centre is real, but the Halifax forumer plastered that sign on the front of the store himself. There are no known plans for a Halifax Simon's store (although Simon's is apparently sniffing around Halifax looking for real estate).

Sorry folks.......

If Simons comes to the Maritimes, it will be Halifax and it would be heading to our lil' Yorkdale of the East AKA the HSC.

Regarding Champlain, it's sad that the mall is becoming so dull and unexciting. We hardly go there anymore, but were there this past weekend and for a Saturday afternoon in September it was dead, mind you it was nice outside, September is still considered a fairly big shopping month. I'm not sure what or if anything can be done, the management and leasing department can only do so much if the retailers are just not interested... and NO this has nothing to do with the rent. Low rent will do nothing to attract what is needed at Champlain. Big names and successful retailers are not afraid of high rent when they reap the rewards of high sales.

For the Mall I do agree it has gotten dull and Boring and we do need some good quality retailers to start filling in that void cause its starting to become worrisome that there is so much good empty spaces. The Champlain place used to be the place to shop and I find that we are lacking behind the Regent Mall and the Malls in the HRM. But hope it can turn around.

Not sure about the Regent Mall, but there is no question that Halifax is starting to pull ahead of Moncton on the retail front quite noticeably; especially with the upgrade of the HSC, and the impending addition of IKEA at Dartmouth Crossing.

The Moncton and Dieppe city development officers (and Champlain Place management) should take note.......

Not sure how best to compare Regent to Champlain since it's apples to oranges, or at least Granny Smiths to Golden Delicious's; but I have noticed that Regent is constantly busy and pretty full at the moment; especially once Lawton's opens up. It does have the advantage of the cadets being dumped into it every weekend or so to keep things hopping. This summer might have been a bit rougher than most, since the bridge to the city was (and still is) out for reconstruction; but that hasn't slowed it down much all in all.

That said, while nothing has been announced, or even hinted at yet (these are rumours of rumours basically), in Freddy we are expecting a new big box area to open up just down the road off of Bishop near the Roundabout. The Irvings are holding that prime land and not letting it be chopped up, so we're expecting it to be "The Bishop Centre" basically; especially now that Corbett is effectively full up. The theory is that Walmart and Cineplex will decamp from Regent and set up shop in there in the near (~5 year) future. (Sobeys was also considered for going in there too, but with their recent hardships that is likely off the radar). For Regent, if Cineplex and Walmart decamp (and the very possible chance that Sears goes belly up), that could put the mall in a bind unless they're ready with new guys ready to fill the gaps.

It's unfortunate that so many Canadian companies have gone belly-up. To me it seems the mall has started in this declining spiral because of the closures. But that's just my 2 cents on the matter. Also I think the way the mall was set up worked for them back when they open in 1974, and even within the following years but it seems like the businesses want more room then what is available. Hopefully it wont but it looks like Champlain might follow in the footsteps of Highfield square.

Golf Town has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Canadian investors have purchased all 55 Canadian stores, but t sounds like all 100 stores in the US may be closed.

Some of the 55 Canadian stores also will apparently be shuttered too. I wonder what this means for the location at the Mapleton Centre? I always got the impression it was at least moderately busy, so hopefully it will be one of the survivors......
