I think Calgary Transit is taking its time transitioning to 4-car trains, since crush loads this year don't seem to happen that often anymore compare to two years ago. From my experience, trains hardly reach crush loads during rush hours. I think they will simply replace the least reliable trains with the new S200s three at a time until all U2s are out of service. I am hoping Calgary Transit keep at least three U2s for heritage purposes.

Well, I was away on the Old Continent for a month and since I got back, there's been really nothing new to report. The fact that another date has come and gone and that we still only have the same 5 cars (S200) speaks for itself. Next Monday, we should see an increase in the number of 4-car trains on the Red line from 4 to 8 (or more) but at this time, there is nobody willing to make a prediction as to when the new S200's will go into service.

How can they put 8 more old cars into service if the new ones aren't running? Are they running some of the oldest trains into the ground knowing they'll be taken out of service soon?

They only need 4 more cars to make up the additional 4 4-car trains but I have no idea how they're going to meet the daily commitment... we'll soon find out. The new date for the s200's entering service is now July the 5th.

The plan isn't really to add 8 more old cars - they're moving from 4 4-car trains to 8, meaning they need four more cars. As soon as the first S200 4-car consist enters service, it frees up three cars from the train it was replacing to make three more 4-car trains. Every three S200s that enter service adds three more 4-car consists.

Here's the latest info: on Tuesday, July the 6th at around 9:00 am, there's going to be a 3 or 4-car train (S200) at Tuscany station for the official unveiling/commencement of service with representatives from all 3 levels of government, Transit and media expected to attend. The mayor will then drive the train to Dalhousie station.

This is the most recent appearance, note the white panel with the new corporate logo on the cowling.

Great news! Looking forward to seeing them in service and an opportunity to hop onboard one! Not sure how I feel about the white panel. I kinda like the uniform red along the cowling. I suppose the logo's gotta go somewhere though.

Tuesday is July 5th - don't mess up your work on that day Rat

For those that want to ride, I believe that trip from Tuscany with the mayor driving is a revenue trip, so it will carry on in service (ie. With passengers and station stops).

And it did happen this morning according to the news, and I saw one go past from my office at the University.

Is the wide-scale roll-out of the 4 car dream by the end of 2016 even realistic anymore?

Honestly, if I see any more rusty old POS U2's in 2017 I'm gonna barf

I don't take the LRT. Are they still full, or with all the layoffs are 3 cars sufficient?

The U2's are not all of the same age. 27 delivered in 1981, 3 in 1983, and 53 in 1984 (says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CTrain#Rolling_stock). 63 S200's were ordered. I have no knowledge of the retirement schedule, but I imagine it's going to take a while to get rid of the U2's.

And really, are they really That bad? I'm a frequent user of the C-Train and while I'd love to have the entire fleet modernized, I have no problem sticking with the U2's for years to come if it means we can get the 4-car plan going quicker and increase the amount of trains on the tracks.
