Yeah, the built form actually matches the scenery / area pretty well.

If you are looking for classic urban form then the only place you will find a decent example of that in the Okanagan is the old downtown streets of Kelowna.

Kamloops also has some, but that is not the Okanagan. Then there are other old small towns in the are that have some of their frontier buildings and character left, but again that is different than the classic urban form that many on here love.

I like the open arid town feeling.

And yes, Osoyoos has an odd mix (similar to the Gulf Islands) of residents and culture. From what you described to the most artsy and hippy people possibe (the South Okanagan constantly votes NDP).

Either way, if you are visiting BC in the summer I highly suggest you visit Osoyoos.

Indeed it is. I lived there for a spell.

Largely populated by oldies and grizzled, seedy/stanker sort of people 9 months of the year (plus a few Sikhs and Portuguese, who own many of the orchards/vinyards). The population quadruples during the summer, with an influx of Albertans, Vancouverites, Quebecois fruit pickers, and even more oldies (snowbirds). Fantastic scenery, great orchards and vineyards, hit or miss architecture, and seedy underbelly. Plus there is a Smitty's (just for Otacular).

Hard core urban and hard core green is the best combination you can have. A concrete jungle and an actual jungle... combined!

One without the other are just not the same.

To my eastern eyes, those frontier towns have a strong allure mythologized in many a Hollywood western. One of my favourite ones is Wayne, Alberta. Home of the 'Last Chance Saloon'.

I would have pegged the entire Okanagan as Conservative Party territory but I guess there are a lot of counter culture types in the region.

Can one still buy land to the east or west of Osoyoos (in the middle of nowhere) or is it all pretty much spoken for these days? I know the Nk'Mip own a large swath where their resort is and the bits to the north of it.

There may be some property west of Osoyoos, but most of the warmer / drier land in the South Okanagan is spoken for: Private, agriculture, native reserve, provincial parks, nature conservation societies, federal government.

Had to Google. If not, looks just like him.

His face, though, is very Myers from Port aux Choix area. There's dozens of them with that face. So probably just a local guy.

That giant set: are they all Vancouver? If so, I'm very impressed. Those photos have shown the city in a very favourable light.

All photos are of downtown Vancouver, except three: one is an inner-city Vancouver neighbourhood; another is a Vancouver suburb; and another is the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Barrington Street in Halifax. The building being restored dates back to 1830; its facade was hidden under stucco for as long as I remember it. The yellow building on the right is Carleton House, originally built in 1760 using materials salvaged from Louisbourg (maybe those foundation stones are from Louisbourg?). The corner building originally had a cornice and rooftop clock. Maybe those will be restored someday too.

Here's a larger view of the downtown area from a cruise ship. It gives a good overview of some of the construction activity. From this angle you can also see a lot of buildings that don't make it into the standard skyline shots. Fenwick, the 70's era concrete building that looks like it has a blue patch, is in the middle of a reclad. To the right of Fenwick you can see the Bethune Building, one of only a few pre-war highrise buildings in the city.

I agree. It's a different side of the city compared to what we're used to seeing around here.

I disagree. There is no question there is a theme and mood to the photographs. But with the exception of a few interior shots (i.e., staircases and rooms of historic downtown buildings) which not every single Vancouverite might be personally familiar with, and a couple of close-up people shots (where it is virtually impossible to know the location of, such as Granville Street in bokeh or a rooftop in Gastown, etc.), every shot is of an iconic building, streetscape, concert hall or public space in Vancouver which thousands (or tens of thousands) of Vancouverites and tourists pass by or enter into every day. Most of the locations are not just commonplace; they are virtually unavoidable.

^ Fair enough. I'm just saying it's not really what we're used to seeing of Vancouver in this forum.
