As per the CTV piece, in true Edmonton fashion, apparently the SB-EB Henday to Yellowhead flyover will be painted as 1 lane instead of the originally planned 2. The reason given is that the 2nd lane will be dropped before traffic merges onto EB Yellowhead anyway, so you might as well drop it immediately after traffic exits from SB Henday. I see
zero advantage in this aside from creating a super wide shoulder on the flyover for the purpose of the city shooting radar from the bridge. So much fail. Let me try and illustrate...
Orange arrow points to the place at which the 2nd lane of the flyover would have originally dropped, just prior to merging EB. It's now dropping prior to the orange X. ZERO advantage for anybody... you now have to get stuck behind trucks for the entire 2 km of the flyover instead of being able to jump past and have them merge in behind you. Again to clarify, the 2 lane flyover was dropping down to one lane anyway, but all they've done now is waste the pavement and paint the flyover as one lane until presumably EB mainlane is upgraded to ultimate stage after which the 2nd lane of the flyover will not be dropped.
This would be equivalent to the NB-WB movement from Gateway to WB Henday, which merges onto WB as only one lane, dropping the 2nd lane immediately after NB-EB traffic has split off. If they'd done this BS over there, traffic would back up in the left lane to Ellerslie Rd.
And before I forget, there's about a 15 meter section on SB mainline right before the bridge over Yellowhead where the right shoulder is a steep drop down to WB Yellowhead and there's no guardrail or at least cable barrier. A little bit of ice and someone could go flying down the hill and hit the pier, or potentially onto WB YHD and get smoked.
