Makes sense - you wouldn't want to spend millions of dollars on a high quality boulevard only to have it torn up when they move in the heavy equipment to put up a new building.

Unfortunately, this probably means that it'll be 10 years or so before the project is complete (this is after all Moncton) - I'll likely be dead.

Isn't all that land to the west of Downing Street owned by Assomption Vie? I do recall that they are officially on board with the whole Downing Street project, so if a developer does come along, I'm sure they would sell the land to allow it to happen.

Downing is beautiful at night. The lighting is stunning. Although, as I'm not clear of the rules, I think I might have driven the wrong way.

some new information on the Junction (Tannery) Village:

The developer (Vaughan McLellan) was interviewed on CBC radio this morning.

- Official opening announcement will be next week.
- Two new buildings will be started next spring. One of these will be a hotel (presumably the rumoured Hilton Garden Inn), and the other will be a mixed commercial/retail/residential building. These will be ready for occupancy in 2018.
- two to three additional buildings are planned, and these will likely start construction in 2018.

The developer hinted strongly that the nearby events centre influenced development of the urban village (at least the construction schedule). Importantly, the 2018 opening of the hotel matches the opening date of the events centre........

I'm definitely looking forward to the opening announcement next week.

Hopefully the Opening announcements will give us some more detail on the hotel, the size and the mixed buildings size and height.

I'm particularly happy to hear that construction of the new hotel is confirmed for the spring of 2017.

If tall enough (5-6 stories or more), that might mean yet another traditional tower crane on the horizon for next year.

For 2017 therefore we might have traditional tower cranes on the skyline for:

- Hilton Garden Inn
- Horizon Place
- Harper Building
- FiveFive Queen

And you could throw in the crawler crane at the events centre, the crane at the Dumont and several mini tower cranes for variety!

Edit - I forgot the Holiday Inn & Suites on Mapleton. That's going to be six stories and will need a tower crane too.

I'm eager to see some renders. I hope their plan doesn't succomb to the "cheapening" effect when developers are faced with real world decisions.

The location is perfect and thus it deserve a well thought out and high quality urban development. With a large grocery store and new gym next door and being steps from downtown, I can see this being popular with young professionals moving to the area. I hope it's at least as nice as the previous renders.

Great news. I hope all stays on schedule and we actually see these projects move forward in the Spring.

Anybody hear any news on Five Five Queen? I would expect to see them breaking ground at any point.

There are still cars actively parking there for monthly parking.. . Suggests its not this month.

They had a large irving crane on steadman yesterday finally placing the large in-ground concreate storm water junction basin on steadman/queen st.. the hole was about 40ft deep .. quite the dig.. they are slowing filling street back now..

I wonder if we should start calling the west end of the downtown core (around the events centre) the Arena District like in Edmonton.

The neighbourhood in Edmonton around the new Rogers Arena is completely reinventing itself as a residential/entertainment district. Maybe something like that will happen here too........

All I'm hoping is that the hotel and the residential/commercial will be atleast 7-10 stories, I think that would add such a nice change to the area. That end would start to feel more complete.

I appreciate the sentiment Monctoncore, but I think the scale of the development will likely closely parallel that of the original render below:



ie - the hotel will be six stories (similar to the Hilton Garden Inn currently under construction in Freddy), and the residential/commercial buildings will be four stories.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes "density" isn't the same thing as height. I think I would take a complete neighbourhood of four storey buildings (European style density) over a single 15 storey tower surrounded by surface parking.........

It's interesting that they are planning to build two of these buildings concurrently, with two (three) more in 2018. Methinks that by employing this strategy, that they will be able to share a single tower crane between the two buildings.

regarding the Sobeys Extra store on Vaughan Harvey:

I now have it from two sources (one Sobeys employee and another very interested party who has some inside information) that this project is not cancelled, but simply "delayed", perhaps to be resurrected next spring.

Still, it is curious that they went to the trouble to fill in the area that they had previously excavated. I suppose this might make some sense if they are uncertain as to how long the delay might be.

In any event, there appears there might still be some hope for this project.
