The stadium looks great... good job, guys!
I too like the way they've used the old benches.

Wonder what a stadium can do for a city?

An arena, a building boom, a downtown transformation. Love it or hate it, this is really happening

PAULA SIMONS, EDMONTON JOURNAL

It’s hard to find a happier man in town than Jim Taylor.

For years, the affable director of the Downtown Business Association has been advocating for new investment in Edmonton’s long-depressed city centre. Now, with Rogers Place set to open this month, Taylor says his biggest problem is that he’s getting tired of saying “I told you so.”

“It’s like Christmas Eve. All the presents have been bought and they’re under the tree. Now we just need to take the wrapping off,” he enthuses.

It’s not just the arena itself that has Taylor so gleeful. It’s all the stuff going up around it.

The 27-floor Edmonton Tower, almost finished, which is to be occupied by year’s end.

The 67-storey Stantec Tower, now rising above grade, soon to be the tallest building west of Toronto.

The luxury 55-storey J.W. Marriott Hotel, already under construction, the first major four-star hotel to be built downtown in decades — and the first to be topped with 264 “service flats”, high-end condos for people who want hotel room service and other such grace notes.

Another 40-storey apartment now, just now breaking ground, on the site where the bedraggled old Greyhound Station once stood.

Mosaic looks fantastic. I love the two lounges/club seating - one which is more basic and carries the themes over from Old Mosaic with the incorporation of the old seating while the other features a multi-level swankier, luxurious feel incorporating higher-end finishes on the flooring, walls and ceiling.

Over $3000 for a single season ticket in the swankier club! Damn, that's expensive!

I guess the Riders have been replacing bench seating at the old stadium for some time now if they had all those old materials available for the lounge?

They replaced the wood benches in my area of the stadium in this last off-season. Likely just took enough of all the different colours to be able to complete the work and make sure they had authentic materials at hand to finish the work.

They did also replace the West Grandstand's wood benches with aluminum well in excess of 10 years ago, but it's unlikely they kept any wood from that.

I find it pretty weird that they would have taken off the LED strip on the press box at MTS

The NMS looks amazing. I must say that that visitors locker room looks a bit weak. I get that you aren't going to provide the lap of luxury for the guests but you look at many new stadia and they visitors' rooms are at least nicer than that!

The pics of the visitors dressing room are misleading, they are actually very nice. Chairs will be provided as obviously 300lb men won't fit in the stalls. There are actually 4 dressing rooms with wall dividers that can be easily opened to transform them into 2 big dressing rooms. I will tell you one thing, when they walk out onto the field of play the visiting teams will be in awe, it's a fantastic perspective walking out from the SW tunnel.

Wow. I don't like anything to do with the Riders but I am LOVING that new stadium!

Calgary, take note! That's how to do a new CFL stadium!

Unfortunately, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation seems to care more about building a new arena which isn't needed yet, than replacing a stadium which does need it. Personally I think Mayor Nenshi is right to look out for the taxpayers, and force CSEC to either wait or use their own money to build. Waiting allows the Saddledome to be used to its full lifespan, allows time for remediation of contaminated West Village land for future development (which may include a new arena), and also allows time for East Village to complete its revitalization (so it's not competing with West Village).

I'd like to see McMahon Stadium get replaced with something new, but this is complicated by the fact the land is owned by the University of Calgary, and also by CSEC's focus on hockey. (In some ways, I think the Stampeders would be better served being owned by an entity that wasn't CSEC.)
