Here's the view as you make your way up the alley from Robson Street to the wine bar. Last two pics are looking back towards Robson Street.

It'll be interesting to see how they try to make this work. If they're going to put tables and chairs outside the wine bar at anytime I wonder if they've taken into account the slope of the pavement. Not only towards the gutter in the centre but also down to Robson Street.

I wonder if the Kingston could put a patio in the alley now if they did some renovations to open up the back. It would be great if the Kingston changed it's colour scheme to stand out more.

In the rendering, it looks like the tables and chairs compensate for the slope. Or they'll just use wine glasses like these.

The idea is praiseworthy IMO, but I think they will have a Titanesque job of keeping it going: the slope, the machinery and garages in the alley, the stark, gloomy concrete buildings.
If there's some way of lighting it colouring it up a bit, greening it a bit, maybe putting sky-reflecting mirrors on the upper adjacent walls ..... but it looks like a toughie for sure.

Maybe the Kingston is still waiting for everything to be completed before they do any renovations or refreshing. It could certainly use a good scrub and a new awning over the front door. I also wonder if they would want to make an investment on remodelling the ground floor area in the back if they're not sure how successful the alley is going to be.

The Kingston is a complete dumb, but I'm actually glad now it wasn't included in the development. Hopefully in a couple years it can be bought and renovated into a cute boutique hotel with a nice bar/lounge on the ground floor.

I've stayed there several times over the years when I got flooded out of my apartment. I've also recommended it to family and friends and they loved it. Relatively inexpensive but well kept and charming. Definitely not high end though and I think it can offer a nice alternative to the posh food and beverage offerings in the immediate neighbourhood. At some point I imagine some of the guys (and gals) in the tower above might like to have a place nearby where they can go in their t-shirts and jeans and watch the game over some beers and pub food. The place does need a refresh but I hope it's not radically changed.

Thanks for those pics mcminsen! Much appreciated, i had never taken a look at the whole structure before. Just looking now, the Kingston has alot of potential to expand the hotel into the right half of their property where the single storey cinder block addition is. If they did rebuild that half they could at least have a more open concept restaurant space fronting Richards, that alley is bleak. If they set back the new facade on the right they could have space for a patio at the front of the hotel. I wonder if they can also build up, the original 4 storey section appears to be poured concrete so they should be able to add one or two floors above. Would the city allow expansion of the hotel?

Another thing, they should rebuild their awesome old neon sign to it's former glory (coinciding with Vancouvers soon to be loosened signage bylaws obviously ) Why would they ever tone it down! Info on signage update and link to survey on this thread:

When was the last time you were there?

It is not a dump. It is not disgusting. It was impeccably clean the last time I stayed there last summer. I think the neighbourhood where I live can be best served by a variety of options. Also, I admire the owner for thumbing his nose at Telus and standing his ground and refusing to sell.

Smack amid Telus Garden complex, I think The Kingston Hotel makes a funky sort of "oasis." May it ever be thus.
