Vancouver's new casino complex Parq Vancouver is taking nicely shape. The brown tinted glazing looks amazing and is something not seen in Vancouver almost never.













Neighbouring One Pacific has now been completed and really compliments Parq. Together they will make for a nice modern complex.

Speaking of downtown, wasn't there a 500ft tower proposed or in the pipeline at one point?

I can still remember how sketchy downtown New West used to be. Crawling with hobos and drug dealers. It has come a long way for sure.

I believe recent press releases by Bosa confirmed they are looking to max out the height too, since they are dropping the towers from 3 to 2.

I didn't realize it has now shrunk down to only two towers. That is probably a good thing though. The more open space along the waterfront the better.

I'm also a fan of New West. It has tons of potential. The only thing I don't like is the lack of gorgeous mountain views that you get almost everywhere else in Metro Vancouver.

In a highrise condo you can easily get views of the nearby mountains or Mount Baker. There are also some views a bit north of New West, closer to Sapperton up the hill. The view of SFU and North Road is actually really nice.

New West is interesting for having a bit of older urban fabric surrounded by what is otherwise mostly postwar suburbia. I think it is a nice place to live and makes a lot of sense for people who want a slightly quieter or more affordable neighbourhood but don't want to be out in suburbia. It has a lot of limitations that don't really come across in photos though. It has nowhere near the level of restaurant options and nightlife of even East Van or Kits, let alone downtown Vancouver. It doesn't feel like the downtown area of a standalone city. Columbia, as far as commercial options, local services, and foot traffic is more like a (slightly run down) neighbourhood commercial strip that just happens to have tall buildings. A lot of the local shops and restaurants feel like they are stuck in the 80's. The Columbia station area is still pretty rough; closer to New West station is a little nicer. The waterfront is getting better but it still has the sterile feel that is common of 1970's and 80's developments. There may be a number of highrises but there's not much going on at street level. It reminds me a bit of the quieter housing developments surrounding Granville Island. If you want to live in a vibrant urban environment you will not find those areas very satisfying.

I agree that New West station itself has been pretty successful. Hopefully more stations around metro Vancouver will be turned into mixed-use developments like that.

So, a few pics from one of my favorite summer destination in Canada, Osoyoos.

I hadn't been in Osoyoos for over 5 years, so it was great to spend a few hot summer days there this year. Both days i was there were just above 35, so it was a great summer rest.

Fruit stands are everywhere, and visiting them eating all the fresh fruit and melons southern BC has to offer is one of the best parts of summer in the South Okanagan.

I stayed at the Nk'Mip desert resort around this time last year. Great spot! Osoyoos is easily one of my favourite places in Canada.

Never been to Osyoos, looks almost Tuscan. It's too bad most of the towns in the interior developed when they did, because the landscape deserves a much better built form.

A lot of the modest buildings in Osoyoos have that retro 1960s desert feel to them. Vintage deco signs in neon, pink flamingos, pastel colours, etc. Some of it is just bad but the town seems to get away with having some stinkers here and there. The scenery is just spectacular.

What surprised me the most was that it seemed to have a seedy under belly with Hells Angles and trashy waitresses who like them. It's definitely a bizarre place.
