^Yeah no kidding.

All I have to say about the window decals debate is "first world problems".

Congrats Edmonton.

Video display in the Winter Garden is M-A-S-S-I-V-E.

All kinds of folks, locals, tourists, old, young, on 104 at 104 last night enjoying the sultry night and gawking at the Garden.

The Yards Magazine Presents: The Great Arena District Debate!

⏲ Thursday September 29 2016 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM

 Epcor Tower, 16th Floor, 10423 101 St NW, Edmonton, AB, Canada
Please join us for the The Yards magazine's fall issue launch and a very special event, featuring a showdown between a prominent supporter and opposer of the billion-dollar Ice District. Will this generational project impact our core communities for better or worse? Have your say and cast a vote after Ian O’Donnell of the Downtown Community League and UofA professor Jay Scherer go head to head on one of the most divisive local issues in recent memories.

Then stick around for music, drinks and food as the conversation continues at this lively salon. Proceeds from ticket sales help to fund this innovative media project.

6pm - Doors Open

7pm - THE DEBATE: “Be it resolved that the Ice District will improve quality of life in our core communities.”

On the affirmative side: Ian O’Donnell, a project manager with Manasc Isaac architecture, who sits on the arena’s community benefit board and chairs DECL’s development committee.

On the opposing side: Jay Scherer, a researcher who wrote a paper on suppressed opposition to the arena and who is currently studying the impacts of the arena district for a forthcoming book.

The format: Each debater will have opening remarks, followed by one round of rebuttals, a round of audience Q&As, and closing remarks.

7:45- Onwards - Stick around for an evening of conversation and cocktails. [[Music by NVS to keep the night going. ]]

Check out our last issue at theyardsyeg.ca.

The Yards is hyper-local quarterly magazine focused on urban, cultural and social issues in central Edmonton. Published by the non-profit Central Edmonton News Society in partnership with the Downtown Edmonton and Oliver Community Leagues, it’s mailed to these community’s residents four times a year.

Paula Simons: An arena, a building boom, a downtown transformation. Love it or hate it, this is really happening

"The pace and scale of development is dazzling — more like something you might see in Shanghai or Dubai than Edmonton. After so many decades of our downtown sitting in stasis, it’s hard to absorb just how ambitious and transformative this project could be — and to grasp that it is actually happening, here, now, and not just in some sales pitch."

It is retouched as all my photos are, but mostly just to fix lens distortion and a bit of white balance to make it cooler as the streetlights are reeeally orange, and a bit of clarity/contrast. Here is that shot unedited...

And another wider shot from last night, again slightly edited.
