They have a website now outlining all the opening activities for the Eccles Theater.

It looks like they are going to do it up right. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Megan Hilty are big broadway names so it will be cool to have them as the first performers on the theater's opening night. I like that they are going to have a mix of "black tie" events with lots of free tours and performances during the opening weekend. It won't be cheap to be there for opening night, but I bet they will make it a memorable evening. I'm saving up my pennies to be there.

I'm so excited for what this theater is going to add to SLC's cultural scene.

Did anyone see them testing the lights in the crown of the 111 tower tonight? I'm impressed with the palette of colors they were showcasing. Red, gold, green, blue, white and combinations of all of the above including a full rainbow look. They also can do all kinds of "flashing effects" that looked very cool. I remember some people asking what the range of colors will be. From what I saw tonight, the options are many and depending on how playful they want to be, we may see all kinds of fun light shows on top of 111.

Given that it's owned by the LDS church, I'll don't think we'll ever see them use the full rainbow effect.

I wondered about that when I saw them showcasing the rainbow look last night. I wonder if that will be the one and only time we see it. Who knows. Maybe they will surprise us. One thing is for sure: they have much more robust capacities with 111 than anything I've ever seen with 222. I am curious to see how/when they will use them.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do color schemes in association with shows playing at Eccles. Such as a green crown is Wicked is in town, or blue white and red during Les Miserables. I think that would be pretty cool. Even more than the crown, I think Regent St needs to embrace lighting and decor choices based on the current show, along with projecting images on the parking structure as well as the ground, corresponding to the current or upcoming show. Green lighting with the witch image being projected, for Wicked. Blue white and red and the image of the flag and the little girl for Les Mis. White lights, projecting mask images and a chandelier for Phantom. Regent REALLY needs to embrace and become all things Eccles Theater.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them use a full rainbow effect, if such exists. Different symbols mean different things to different people. Here's the "cultural celebration" for the Payson temple last year, held at BYU:

But I get your point... if they ever do use the feature, it's probably not when anyone else would be.

I wish I would have been able to take a picture of the full rainbow effect. By the time I got out my camera, they had stopped going through the testing round and went back to all white. But a full rainbow in all its glory is fully possible atop 111 I assure you.

It occurred to me that the lobby of the Eccles Theater has a full rainbow look going on there with panels of all different colors being the most prominent feature. So the property is not a stranger to a rainbow look even now.

I agree with Hatman that the rainbow can have different meanings for different people so I'd be surprised if they would rule out its use at any time. All I can say is that what I saw last night was something really impressive in terms of scale and scope of what the crown can do. I like FutureMayor's idea of them correlating colors to specific productions. I am almost certain that they will want to showcase the crown's capabilities more often than just during Utah football wins and certain holidays like 222 does now. That crown can almost do a laser show. It seriously has an almost light saber effect with light saber-like blasts of different colors. The thing is cool.

The 111 crown has been putting on a cool little light show every night the past week or so. Hope this is a trend that continues. Such an awesome feature for downtown to have!
