To certain members of this forum, Ben Mulroney has committed the most heinous of crimes - he is the son of a former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister who has chosen to parlay his childhood celebrity status into becoming a celebrity morning talk show and entertainment show host.

Compare this to Justin Trudeau, son of a former Liberal Prime Minister who has parlayed his childhood celebrity status into a glad handing selfie taking politician and Canadian Prime Minister. A status, which allows him to walk on water (at least as far as some forumers are concerned).

Interestingly, Ben and Justin are actually friends, connected through Sophie Gregoire. I imagine both JT and Ben might be a little hard to take at times, but really, neither one is a bad individual. Happily prime ministerial children in this country tend to grow up into relatively normal adults.

If Justin Trudeau hosted an E channel 'news' show I'd probably hate him too. That channel is the devil.

Boils down to hero vs villain to the most populous part of the nation and that has nothing to do with party politics. Mulroney's second term ended as a disaster with too many debilitating concessions made to get the US to sign the free trade agreement. We got over it though. Can't say the same with the west and Trudeau and NEP that happen 10 years earlier

There is also mairie. In English it would be mayory or something.

Ben's unfortunate physical resemblance to his father is hard to ignore, but the unctuousness of his TV persona is more than enough reason to find him suited to Ugly Canada on his own merits!

Unctuous is the perfect word to describe him. Also smarmy. I find it ridiculous when conservatives claim that his father is the only reason he is hated. Personally I don't even mind Brian Mulroney. He was articulate and the GST needed to happen. I could easily see BM Jr. fitting in to the Trump clan alongside Eric and Don Jr. They all have that smug face you'd love to punch that belonged to many an 80's comedy villain.

In fact, I considered "smarmy" but went with "unctuous" for its higher oil content. I accept that his on air persona may bear little resemblance to what he's like in real life (one could only hope!).

You inevitably gotta cut corners in some places in order to manage both low taxes and high funnelling of municipal money to friends at the same time.....

BTW, guys, the original sense of the word hotel is more like just a building that houses people. For example, in modern French, "hôtel particulier" is an urban SFR, while an "hôtel de rapport" is what we'd call an income multiplex in English.

The town hall on the other side of the pond is pretty much always called "mairie", though.

This is the worst example of 'garage houses' that I have come across.

Winnipeg's newer subdivisions are absolutely lousy with that sort of thing, although the absolute worst seemed to happen during the 2000s. The newest subdivisions are growing at least a little restrained in their enthusiasm for what is depressingly referred to here in realtor-speak as the "cab-over" design.

Comes down to the lesser of two evils though. If you push the garbage back into the house you lose half the main floor sq ft. If you have a laneway you lose half your backyard to a garage.

Functionally it's nice not have to scrape ice, wipe off snow or come out to a baking hot car depending on the season, don't have to worry about vandals or theives. Also the storage is invaluable.

That's bad but at least it has real windows. Check out this garage house in Calgary with a fake window on top to make it look slightly more like it isn't solely designed for a car.

Is that street named for Rod Black the sports guy? I though you had to be dead for them to name stuff after you.

There was a Barack Obama Avenue in East STL as early as several years ago (I know that from seeing the big standard green signs on the interstates indicating it, and it struck me as completely premature -- if we can't wait until he's been dead for a while, can't we at least wait until the guy is done with his mandate?)

That's equivalent to renaming a main Montreal artery "Denis Coderre boulevard" or "Justin Trudeau boulevard" right now. Insane.
