The church I'm not sure you would get much they have a tendency to put scaffolding on the outside, and cover it up as they have done to a few buildings in Downtown, and other churches in the city when they had to do the work.

The hole inside the construction fence of Sobeys Vaughn Harvey has now been filled. Should be seeing asphalt trucks and pave company coming in soon.

This in my opinion is the stupidest thing they could have done. Why not finish a project you would have started.

Nice photo. But what is the end game of this project, other than to give downtown a big wide sidewalk?

It's a street, not a sidewalk even tho it looks like one.

This is the end game:

Phase two of the project will be creation of the second traffic lane and the parkland boulevard section in between. These will connect to Assumption Blvd via a roundabout.

Phase three is extension of the landscaping onto Riverfront Park, with creation of a permanent performance space and a viewing platform over the Petitcodiac River.

As for the new buildings lining either side of Downing Street - that's just an artist's conception. There are no plans that I'm aware of for actual buildings (yet), although the city has already committed for a new $40M police HQ building in the downtown in the next few years. If this is built next to the courthouse, this should partly face along a portion of Downing Street.

And, yes, Downing Street isn't meant to be a true street in the conventional sense of the word. It is planned to be a pedestrian space in which low speed vehicular traffic is also allowed. So in some senses, it will be a "really wide sidewalk"

Do we know when phase two is supposed to happen? Also looking at the render and then looking at Budyser photo, you can start to see how much of this project will eat into the parking and if they want to fit that large triangular park in the middle, they will have to bring the road as far over as the old jail.

View from Assumption blvd.

This project could take several years. Maybe not for the road, sidewalk, rotary and landscape, but for the Blue Cross addition and the two retail/condos, that may very well be many many years down the road!

I love the proposed/implied purposing of it for multiple food trucks all summer.

Yes, and the other implied purposes of Downing Street being a significant public space for the downtown core, and a connector between the city hall plaza and Riverfront Park are also huge.

When complete, this will be where most of the downtown festivals and events will take place.

Excellent. Those comparison pics have given me a much better visual concept of it.

Now just imagine the bluecross expansion on one side and the RCMP headquarters on the other. Now add on the Courthouse and we have a small stretch of assumption Blvd. filled in.

Also on a side note does anyone know if the city has plans to finish the side walks etc. on Westmorland, because currently there are no sidewalks. It just seems strange for a main road downtown to no have sidewalks and a dirt shoulder on the parking lot side.

Can someone explain to me how the name Tannery Village came about? Wasn't it the Junction not long ago? Different ownership/management?

I'm not sure precisely, but there is no question that the development has been "rebranded", even if the overall plan remains largely unaltered.

The original developer has partnered with new investors, including Symcorp Investments out of Toronto, so it is entirely possible that the renaming of this project was at their behest.

Was there ever a tannery on the site of this development?

I know the name The Junction was based off the properties original use when owned by the Railway. I talked to everyone who would know any info on this, and there has never seemed to have been a tannery at that location. So it seems to just have been a name from thin air in this case.

Long ago, maybe 40 years or more, there used to be a Tannery Street right at that location, running south off Main Street.
I don't remember an actual tannery but old timers like me might recall the old Army Surplus store located there back in the '60s. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a tannery there at some point as there were several very old (and very unsightly) buildings there in the '60s and maybe the '70s before they all got torn down.
