Looks like East Market is going forward with th second residential tower:

The 21-story tower, which would be built atop a retail podium currently planned at the corner of 12th and Market Streets, would add 240 residential units to the 322 rental apartments already under construction at the development site, according to documents posted Wednesday to the website of the city's Civic Design Review board.

good to see, too bad the building is so forgettable. Not that the first tower is anything special.

It's a step in the right direction.
Market east is boring.
You have to build supertall to generate excitement for the area.

Nah, I thought it was ugly as heck too. But I understand from an architectural perspective it would have been cool to save it.

I'm way too hype about this and Market East in general. Filling in that "gap" between City Hall and Old City will be great for the city, especially if more retail returns.

Philly's Parkway Corp. plans Broad and Spring Garden project with Nightingale of New York

Philadelphia's Parkway Corp. has acquired an interest in a 1.5-acre parcel on the northwest corner of Broad and Spring Garden Streets, where it plans a complex of shops, homes and offices, Parkway president Robert Zuritsky said Wednesday.

Parkway plans to partner on the project with Nightingale Properties, with which it shares ownership of the site that covers all but a sliver of the block bounded by Broad and 15th Streets, between Brandywine and Spring Garden Streets, Zuritsky said in an interview.

The partners are contemplating a dense, mixed-use development at the site, but are in the beginning stages of refining their plan, Zuritsky said.

Glad to see Philadelphia named "No. 2 shopping city in the world" by Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

I really need to plan a visit.
Just a few quick questions:

What is Reading Terminal Market and should that be a must visit?
How has the Gallery changed over the years?
Is it still a vibrant place to shop as it was in the 80's?
Any other shops anyone want to recommend?

As for the article, I'm glad that the SLS Lux Philadelphia Hotel & Residences on S. Broad was recognized. That's one of my fav projects!

1. The best food hall/functioning market in the country. And yes.
2. It's never been great
3. No. Never was.
4. Generally Walnut and Chestnut Streets west of Broad Street, portions of Chestnut Street east of Broad, Pine Street east of Broad, 3rd and 2nd Streets in Old City mostly north of Market.

It depends on what you like to shop for, but Philadelphia has a really unique mix of national and local retailers. For example, if you were a sneakerhead, you can't miss Ubiq or Lapstone & Hammer. They're two of the best sneaker stores in the country, IMO. Also really beautiful, unique interior spaces and representative of how local retailers maintain an edge in many ways over the national chains. Generally, the larger national retailers / upscale contemporary brands are on Walnut Street west of Broad, the large format national chains (Uniqlo, Old Navy, Forever 21, H&M, Nordstrom Rack, etc) are on Chestnut west of Broad, furniture & design stores are on Chestnut East of Broad (West Elm, Cella Luxuria) and in Old City. Lots of cool independent clothing stores on N 3rd Street. Antiques are on Pine Street.

But really there are pockets of cool retail and restaurants scattered all over. N 2nd Street in Northern Liberties, 4th & Brown in Northern Liberties, Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, Passyunk Avenue (east of Broad) in Passyunk Square in South Philly, Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill, Baltimore Avenue in West Philly, etc.

sls has been mentioned in many articles, but no one seems to get any new details about when it will start.

I just find it odd that a reporter would note the projects as coming soon and get a quote from a hotel rep but not actually make any mention of the fact that SLS has been stalled for a long time with no new info from Dranoff. If Philly needs more hotel rooms and condos and the location is great I am really wondering why it can't get off the ground.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's not happening lol. Go back and reread the numerous posts I've made about it in the past. I've personally spoken with the individual raising funds for this project. The project is shovel ready - the money and investor interest isn't there.
