Anyone want to buy a home in Patricia AB? The most depressing town / hamlet I have ever been to. It's mostly comprised of trailers but has homes like these interspersed throughout.

http://www.royallepage.ca/en/property/alberta/patricia/213-sligo-street/4216383/mlssc0076505/

The hotel is the only business / place to buy anything in town. We stopped there to get some Deep Woods Off while being devoured by mosquitoes on our camping trip in Dinosaur Provincial Park.

Paradise by the dashboard lights.

I thought it was a church. But it might also be a warehouse.

No surprise, I'm sure, but I don't mind those. I'd replace every SFD area of my city with them tomorrow.

I've never seen the inside of one of the suburban West End townhouses before. They're hideous outside but decent inside.

You're probably right, Molson. But they have paved fronts, infinity parking.

Yes, Acajack.

I'm surprised how true they are to the built form in the core. Never really stared at them before (Cowan Heights just kind of all blends together in my mind into one pale yellow residential strip mall)... but they're one-room wide, 3-4 deep, on long, narrow lots. That's the same as where I live.

I like the cheerful colors used to paint houses (or at least, sprayed on the aluminum siding) in St. John's. I was once told that the gloomier the climate, the more bright the colors of the housing.

Everything new here in London is Earth tone brown and grey/cream stucco. Awful. Soul sucking.

you are right however about the unidriveway abomination. Still doesn't seem as offensive as that example in Calgary.

cbc

^where the fuck do they put the snow piles?

And I hate when people park sideways or diagonally in front of their home.

Yeah, the colours definitely have a positive psychological impact during winter and on grey, foggy days year-round. A sensory Vitamin D pill, I suppose.

They're nice in the sun too, really.

Grey cities in better climates can get the same sort of thing with lots of flowers.

I don't mind a splash of colour here and there, but in snowy Canadian cities, I find many buildings that are too brightly coloured look like gaping wounds in the winter. Of course a sea of beige and taupe doesn't exactly make for an inspiring environment either.

There is nothing like pink brick on semi-detached houses to liven things up! (There are actually quite a few of these in Gatineau. Seems like it was a fad in the late 80s and early 90s.)

That's rough, Acajack.

*****

A cultural one. Our most popular magazine at the grocery this morning:

It serves the lowest common denominator in our society - basically our version of Fox News: obsessed with the Royal Family, religion, local beauty queens, AMERICAN SOAP OPERAS, Coronation Street, family values, and anyone anywhere who has ever visited here or said something nice about us.

The frequency of Royal Family profiles is... insane. Diana has probably been on the cover 20 times since I moved home in 2012.

Some of the most recent past issues as reference:

In reference to the townhouses that Signalhiker posted - it's amazing how something which should be so simple ends up being mangled. The proportions are all off. I also hate that door style which seems to be popping up everywhere.

I wonder if that pink brick has any relation to anything traditional, or whether it was just a design invention of recent decades? I can't imagine why anyone would choose that colour (if they had any choice) over more traditional shades of brown, yellow or red. At the moment, things seem to be very much about slate grey/black brick claddings, which is not horrible but I think it could get tired pretty quickly if there is too much of it.

I ugly world news, I just saw a report about KFC in the States giving away 3,000 bottles of sunblock that smells like its extra crispy chicken. Sometimes I want to weep for humanity!
