So the void in the street wall left by the crackhouse that burned down (twice) on my block is finally being filled - sort of.

For some unknown reason, St. John's allows new infill in rowhouse districts to be set back. It really looks bad to me, despite being better than an empty lot:



The end result is just so... off-putting. The next block over from mine has a bunch in close proximity:



I even prefer when they just remove the first floor of the home to allow for off-street parking - at least it doesn't have as severe an impact on the street wall. An example of that, also from my block (though opposite side of the street):

That's just so wrong on so many levels, especially when you show photographic evidence of the results!

You would think that St. John's city council would have realized their mistake by now........

It wouldn't be so bad if we knew what front lawns were, had a bit of landscaping. Still worse than just the street wall - I loathe setbacks no matter how attractive they might be - but pretty shit is still better than ugly shit.

But, hey... if Gander International closes, at least any street in St. John's will able to handle emergency landings for large airliners.

these pix doesn't do justice to this building's extreme ugliness. Seen from afar, with its forest of antennae and faded paint, variable top and unkempt drapery in windows, asymmetry....it is beyond ugly. Only the London Courthouse building beats this one for ugliness in the world's second largest London.

I think that the latest renovation is perhaps the most offensive. Once the habs vacated, they had a chance to do anything they wanted with the building. They could of wrapped it in glass, or puncture windows or bring back some noble elements to it. Instead they puked on it.

If there's a prominent building in this country that has been mutilated as much as the forum I'd like to hear it.

Oh God! Lol! Seeing the progression (or deterioration) through the subsequent renos and decades is like watching Michael Jackson's plastic surgery. I almost want them to renovate it again with the worst trends of the day. Reinvent it every few decades to the ugliest standards. It could be Montreal's Forum of spite.

Just got back from camping at the edge of Dinosaur Provincial Park. Beautiful landscape spoiled only by two things: voracious biblical swarms of mosquitoes and Tim Horton's coffee cups. I admit to seeing a 20 year old beer can and a broken bottle too, but the brand of litter I saw most was undoubtedly Timmy Ho's. I admit to drinking their cheap swill when I need a quick caffein fix, but why is it that the general clientele it attracts feel the need to litter so much more than those who go to other coffee shops?

pickup truck driving Rim Whoreton's swilling is bad enough, but assholic littering really boils my blood. Same thing here at nearby Pinery Provincial Park. I've witnessed shitheads pitching empty Rim cups from their trucks into nature. what the fuck is wrong with people? why does society tolerate these worthless asswipes?

I like the Tim Horton's spokesperson's excuse that they offer reusable mugs to people in the restaurant (which obviously doesn't do shit for your average drive thru shithead litterer) and that they provide garbage bags for community clean ups. Wow that's some serious corporate responsibility and charity there...

I agree, obviously it's to provide parking, but just how much do you gain? After all, they are losing on-street parking spots in front of every setback with a driveway, and the city just gains another ugly patch of asphalt (suggestion: paving stones would be much better). This is like dental work gone terribly wrong.

I hate littering (I will often pick up the litter I stumble upon) and I may already have told this little anecdote in here:

~10 years ago, while I was visiting relatives on the Riviera, my cousin (at the wheel of her car) noticed I had finished my drink (I was in the front passenger seat) and now had an empty throwaway cup in my hands. I must have been looking for somewhere in her car to temporarily place it, because she noticed that I didn't know exactly what to do with it. She yanked it from my hands, and threw it out the window. I was shocked and outraged, but she told me, dead seriously (in a way not unlike a teacher explaining something to an inexperienced kid), "no worries, there are people paid to pick up litter in this area here".

... all those people littering at Dinosaur Provincial Park are in fact doing their part -- patriotic citizens -- to try to reduce AB's unemployment rate by creating enough demand to justify new job openings for trash pickers

Your comment reminded me of this story that appeared in our local paper last week. A visitor to the west coast was appalled at the amount of litter he found on the streets in Corner Brook and compared it to Stephenville where you can hardly find anything (anymore, it used to be awful).

We fixed the problem a while back by hiring a crew of students every summer. Their job is to walk around downtown picking up garbage, sweeping sidewalks and watering plants hanging from storefronts and street lights. It's great for the environment, improves civic pride and impresses tourists.

“Just look at it, it’s everywhere, and some of it looks like it’s been there for some time.” he commented as he walked back down the street, pointing at paper cups, plastic wrappers and too many cigarette butts to count.

Callahan had just been to Stephenville and said the streets there were a far cry from what greeted him in Corner Brook.

“I couldn’t find garbage on the streets in downtown Stephenville if I went looking for it,” he said.
