There was a big watermain break there in the winter that flooded the plaza and first floor of 1234 main...I'm guessing insurance is covering the cost for plaza renewal?

I'd say that's probably what it is!

The renovation of Sobeys Vaughan Harvey to a Sobeys Extra will not be happening.

What, why not?

Is this because of Sobey's corporate pecuniary difficulties?

What's the current earth moving for? Is that for the NBLC renovations?

Nothing found in excavation purely a financial decision

Which in some ways makes sense but at the same time deciding after excavation starts seems off. They should have known before this it wasn't financially viable.

I agree, but there was a recent shake-up in Sobeys corporate management because of their financial difficulties and the poorly executed expansion in the western provinces.

I imagine the decision to shelve (or at least delay) this project was made by the new interim CEO. He's been on the job about a month. This would explain this hasty decision while the project was just getting started.....

Isn't the new guy actually the old guy and isn't it also the former CEO of Canadian Tire? I wonder if the liquor store still wants to expand though.

The fired Sobeys CEO was Marc Poulin. He has been replaced by Francois Vimard ( the former CFO) on an interim basis. A recent CBC article stated that the board of directors of Empire is displeased with the direction of the corporation and that "more heads are expected to roll"

If Sobeys is indeed hauling in it's horns in order to return to profitability, one has to wonder if the cancelled Sobeys Extra expansion on Vaughan Harvey Blvd will not be the only casualty. In particular, I wonder if the proposed Sobeys plaza on Dieppe Blvd will not also be put back in the can. Sobeys already owns the Co-op/IGA on Dieppe Blvd. Maybe they'll just keep on servicing the neighbourhood with this store for the time being?

Another thing to wonder about is, what will Sobeys do about eventually putting a Sobeys Extra food store in the Moncton market down the road? The Moncton market is too important not to eventually have a Sobeys Extra store. If the NBLC store on Vaughan Harvey gets renovated anyway, this will block any southward expansion of the current food store. Will they instead return to plan "A" and force the relocation of Shoe Tree and GoodLife Fitness for Women and expand toward Main Street? Perhaps they will choose a different location for the Extra format store. Maybe they'll look at placing the Sobeys Extra at Champlain Place. That's certainly a possibility.

Thoughts anyone??

I want thinking the same thing. Sobeys Extra is likely dead.

On a side note that probably would be better suited for the retail thread, I always thought Canadian Tire & Sobeys would make a good partnership. Imagine if they merged, purchased the Zellers banner and had Walmart type stores in bigger markets that was essentially a giant combo store of Canadian Tire/Sobeys/Marks/Sportchek. They would have more purchase power that they currently don't necessarily have.

You forgot Lawton's for the drugstore side as well (Sobeys owns Lawton's). It would be an impressive combination, and being existing brands already in Canada they already have a presence. Merging the supply chains might be too big (though they should be distinct enouhg not to be too challenging). I wonder if the Competition bureau might have an issue? Can't really think why they might.

That's very interesting information.

With Poulin gone, I wonder what they'll do with the existing Sobeys Extra stores. If they get rid of the format, those stores might end up just being "really big Sobeys"..........

Well my idea would be to cover smaller markets with stores next to each other (shediac, Riverview, northwest centre are already next to each other) but then if they bought the zellers name (or used another name) and created a chain of large market stores to compete with Walmart, I think it would work. They would simply be using their current supply chain to supply the new chain. I'm thinking in markets where there is already multiple of any of the current stores it could work. Or they could continue serving the market with their current mix of stores and cross merchandise things across the chain.

Small issue but still relevant what name would they open This large Walmart Super centre like store? Sobeys Super Centre? I'm just wondering. Since all the brands Sobeys/ Lawtons are owned by a company, and Canadian Tire/Sportschek/Mark's Work Wearhouse. Also to make it even worst both Sobeys, and Canadian Tire have there own gas stations.

There is also the fact this type of Merger would look more like Costco without membership fees, then a Walmart Super Centre.
