Why oh why do they call it a "Super Road?"
It's just another reasonably wide (not outstandingly so) traffic thoroughfare like many others in many other cities.
This "Super Road" stuff is grandiose, naïve, and hokey.

who's waiting for them to assign one lane of pacific to a bike lane as well??????

Good planning is just not part of the vision vernacular. The fact that they have the stones to compare this to seattle tearing down the viaducts is a complete and utter joke. They always neglect to mention that infrastructure that is equal or better replaces these pieces of infrastructure in all cases.

Vision can't get out of office soon enough.

Unfortunately, it's not that long ago that they were elected back in. They have the time to see this short-sighted and inadequate project to fruition.

Doesn't make sense to make it constricted like that for a Super-road, whatever that means, especially since there will be added densities along Pacific Boulevard (Vancouver House, Charleson, 1300-1320 Richards, The Arc, One Pacific, Parq Vancouver and the future Plaza of Nations development). Looks like there isn't any long-term transportation planning IMO. EB Pacific Blvd. should at least have 3 lanes: 2 lanes for through traffic and an additional lane for the new development or stadium access, etc.
Expo Boulevard will still carry westbound traffic from the east (right turn off the SuperRoad).
Traffic from eastbound Georgia headed to Yaletown would turn right down any number of streets on the downtown grid
(it would be doubling back to go down to Pacific Boulevard - except for Casino-bound traffic.)

Could you please tell me what 'the duck pond', 'Lake Henderson' and 'Tinseltown are / were. I'd like to know a bit about how it relates to the viaduct removal and replacement. Thank you

There used to be a small water basin where International Village is now. See that patch of water northeast of Rogers Arena?

For better or worse, this is gonna make for some very interesting and vast urban renewal in an area that can really use it. When is the last time we had a project of this scale proposed in Vancouver? Skytrain/expo86?

PLUS when it does begin, it will make this thread very interesting in the future! Again, for better or worse.

So long as City Council actually does something useful with the land. The viaducts going down is only half the controversy.

The OTHER half is how they're getting replaced with a bunch of giant lawns and cookie-cutter high rises. Waste of good space IALOPO.

Which reminds me why a tunnel from Georgia @ Beatty through this area and eastwards to Clarke can't happen because of the high water table thanks to False Creek and the infill over 100 years ago that reclaimed the rest of False Creek between Clark and Quebec for railway yards.

That's Concord land.

If the projects that have been going up in Chinatown are any indication of what's to come, then it will not be as cookie-cutter as other areas.

"Waste of good space". If not parks and new homes, what would you do with that land?

Massey tunnel is beneath part of the Fraser River

Canada Line between Olympic and Yaletown stadiums is under False Creek.

The Chunnel rail runs under the English channel

Hong Kong has a series of tunnels linking Kowloon and HK Island over Victoria Harbour

Bike lanes and urban gardens complete with chicken coops.

Or a potential site for a comprehensive tent city.....

The list is endless.....

And which of those are running through man-made infill land that easily fills with water when dug in?
As seen by "Lake Henderson"

Just following the pattern. Projects like this are often passed up for projects like this for some reason.

Much of the forum knows what I think should go there, and are as tired as I am of me repeating it ad nauseum for the past few months; for the 4-5 users who still don't, please refer to Pages 25-27 and 29-32 of the Northeast False Creek thread.

Avant-garde as it likes to think itself, Vancouver remains a very Presbyterian town at heart. That's great from a work ethic and scholarly POV, but totally functional and unimaginative in look.

You could however easily just do a shallow trench and cover the road. That isn't technically a tunnel though.

Those other examples I gave were essentially buried in water-filled soil, some being the worst kind of clay, and yet they were built: way way harder than what can be done here.
