Are they extending the 555? I don't drive so not sure what 168th would mean.

No changes to the 555 this season.

New seating pilot project for Canada Line begins

Quote:
Canada Line riders may have noticed a little change of seating on their train.

We’ve modified a couple of Canada Line cars to improve traffic flow and customer experience.

In two trains (#119 and #120), we’ve removed 10 seats.
Accessibility seating is completely unaffected.

Why are we doing this?

The seat removal is part of a pilot project to provide additional room near the train doors.

By doing this, customers can get on and off the trains more easily – especially during peak travel times when the trains are fully loaded!

Goals of the project:

Provide greater passenger flow at train doorways which increases safety and improves passenger boardings.
Create a safer and improved vehicle flow for passengers.
Reduce door faults that are caused by crowding which often lead to minor service delays.

The results of this pilot will determine how the fleet is modified now and in the future.

IMO, Translink should do the same thing to the old Mark1 train.

Note that they can't remove the side facing seats between the two sets of doors because there are electronics bays beneath them.

I am exactly thinking about removing 2 of the side facing seats. I guess it is too expensive to relocate the electronics?

I have no idea what would be involved but I'm sure it wouldn't be trivial.

Hi guys,

Buzzer blog website has video interior of MK III's - quite cool. Like the flex space (no seats) for luggage, strollers, etc. It's on both ends of the car - similar to Canada Line area for wheelchairs/bikes...

https://youtu.be/amxVBWTSp2o

Source: Buzzer Blog

Also, interior sign above the front window a la Canada Line...

Sorry, first time posting a link, hope I sourced this right...

From 24 Hrs

Chris Morris, director of engineering assets at B.C. Rapid Transit Company — the SkyTrain company — said the Mark IIIs will eventually replace all SkyTrains. Replacement of the original Mark I trains will likely begin around 2026.
Most of the Mark I trains will be 40+ years old by 2026 so this long term planning for train replacement is good.

Also Mark III train has external camera!

Quote:
Another new addition is the presence of an external camera — currently not active — that would be able to detect objects on the tracks ahead.

“At the very end car. We’re not currently using it, because we have to get an agreement from the privacy officer ... but down the road it enables us to see if there’s an object on the track, or more likely if there’s any anomaly,” Morris said.

I was at the Mark III event today, sadly didn't get to see/hear much of the technical explanations because it was too crowded with media.

I've uploaded some photos to https://goo.gl/photos/5nedz5ibCYyUfbeD8

Great pics. Your video caught the voice-over/announcements for the evergreen line!

Looks good, though I find it unusual how the LED display only says the destination and not other messages. It seems misleading to display King George when one is arriving at Main St Science World.

I agree. Since it's already scrolling just to display "King George" they might as well put "Terminus Station -" for clarity. And the station you're arriving at too, like on the Canada Line.

and this from the 24Hrs article too:

Quote:
The train is also designed for expansion, to add a fifth car, which would allow the train to stretch from one end of the platform to the other.

“So it’ll give us a 25% jump in capacity ... you can save a lot of equipment with that fifth car, you don’t necessarily need everything you got in the other cars, you can share some of the electrics for instance,” he said.

The longer trains with a 5th car would have the nose-ends of the train outside the platform, but this shouldn't be an issue as long as all the doors open on the platform.

It seems we'll have to wait a while for 5 car Mk III trains, because the second batch of Mk III trains arriving next year are also supposed to be 4-car sets.

Perhaps these 5-car trains will be ordered when more trains are needed for the UBC - Broadway extension that may open in the mid-2020's
